I used to be terrified that I would be asked this question. Now I'm asked if my sister is my daughter...which is equally disturbing to me.
@Pinkstarburst 😕 Oh, I'm sorry.
I am actually quite bad at telling a person's age but wouldn't ask that question / assume what relationship a person is to somebody. As for pregnant or not, that is such a bad one to get wrong I would never ever ask!
The lady today clearly meant no harm at all though so didn't take offense or feel bad about it.

@Emele My father was in his 40s when I was born. Down through our years together, people would refer to him as "Grampa." It upset him and I would usually correct the person. People should not make stereotyped assumptions about people they Don't know.

This happened to me when I first gained weight while under much stress in my middle years. Anyone should know better than to say something like that to any woman. I wonder how "sweet" she really is. For some women, it's a way to inflict a catty insult. In any case, she should know better.
@greenmountaingal Yeah, if she had said it like 'excuse me, but are you pregnant?' I would have corrected her and thought it rude. Or if there was any sort of tone to how she asked me. But I was happy to accept it was an actual mistake and she was just being nice. If I was only a bit chubby maybe I would correct her too but the fact is I do have a large/round tummy and ok, she jumped to that conclusion, but I don't think she stopped a second to even think about saying it as an insult.

My girlfriend was at the checkout line and the teller who happened to be an older lady mentioned something about "eating for two."
She laughed it off cause she's always had a big, round tummy and to be fair she had a shopping cart full of ice cream and pizza rolls.

While you’re young and healthy ... get that off . Terrible health issues are just waiting to happen
