Do you understand Stoicism?

helenS · 36-40, F
You mean the ancient philosophy of men like Seneca?
helenS · 36-40, F
@Elessar The term "Stoicism" in ordinary language usually does not refer to ancient philosophy, but to the state of mind of being "stoic".

@helenS You should Google that!
Elessar · 26-30, M
@helenS Hmm, over here I don't think this second meaning is used much.

Always reminded me a bit like the western take on an Eastern spiritual philosophy of being.. experiencing.. not just reacting mechanically to what life throws at you. But it's been a while since looked into it.. so.. could be way off.

I don't think so, but from what I do understand, it's some of the most helpful philosophy I've read. I disagree with its idealism, but I haven't read enough to qualify to criticize

I've heard of it, and remember hearing about it from my grandfather but never really had an interest in learning much about it. Honestly.
Maybe, but not as a single word, time out. I will Google and give a proper response 👍.

& yes is my final response .

I understand the general principle of exercising wisdom and self-control over pain and pleasure, to guide our lives through reason rather than emotion. But that is about the depth of knowledge of it.
