I've just listened to Beethoven's Choral symphony. It was such a joyful piece of music, it's actually made me fill up. I've fallen in love with this music.
The ninth is probably the greatest work of the classical period. It is the essence of enlightenment. From the darkness into the light. All men shall be brothers.
@Mugin16 ... and again interesting. I used to be a big fan of Bach when I was a young girl, because I liked the maths behind the music. It was an intellectual joy. When I got older I very much fell in love with Romantic music (such as Schubert's "Death of a Maiden", meantioned earlier in this thread). It touches my soul much more deeply.
If you can "overlook" the association between the third Reich and classical German music, Beethoven 9 is a magnificent piece. Consider the fact that he was stone deaf when he wrote it and it is even more amazing a piece. The last movement, the choral piece, is often called "Ode to Peace."
in fact I have heard a rock version of that movement and it was in four four and it was unlistenable. The spirit was gone and replaced by pure silliness.
@helenS the Reich chose to use anything and everything in its propaganda. Indeed, Wagner, a more forceful composer, was used more often. I enjoy Der Flaginder Hollander, I have seen it many times.
It is upsetting to see so many politicians adopt music as their anthems, usually without the consent of the composers.
Incredible jaw dropping piece, made me feel like I knew him. When I first heard this I was just getting into choral music at junior high school and I couldn't believe what those voices were doing...it was mind numbing! And with me being a fair to barely middling vocal student.
It was like you had to be a god to sing like that. Impressive. And then when I learned it was all about freedom of the human spirit..well...like WoW. Kennedy was in office in those days and that made a difference to me. Human progress was honored for a little while back then.

I've seen that symphony in concert. It was excellent. There's a lot of great classical music out there.
Symphony No. 9 is by far Beethoven's best, when the choir breaks into Ode to Joy is is amazing :) Since you are now starting to get into his music, I highly suggest this movie, it is my most favorite one of all time ☺️ [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2ql5wODeMY]
I've always loved classical music, and even more than classical, there are some wonderful contemporary orchestral pieces I love. There are some pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams which really send me to heaven. One is "Fantasia On A Theme by Thomas Tallis." Vaughan Williams work is so majestic. I think the viola and violin solos in this are beautiful.
