I've just listened to Beethoven's Choral symphony. It was such a joyful piece of music, it's actually made me fill up. I've fallen in love with this music.

If you can "overlook" the association between the third Reich and classical German music, Beethoven 9 is a magnificent piece. Consider the fact that he was stone deaf when he wrote it and it is even more amazing a piece. The last movement, the choral piece, is often called "Ode to Peace."
@Platoscave I believe that originally it was intended for peace. I think you are correct though in general use. I absolutely adore it. I heard Charles Munch conduct it with the Boston Symphony in Tangelwood the year he retired. We play the last movement in band style in my band.
in fact I have heard a rock version of that movement and it was in four four and it was unlistenable. The spirit was gone and replaced by pure silliness.
@helenS the Reich chose to use anything and everything in its propaganda. Indeed, Wagner, a more forceful composer, was used more often. I enjoy Der Flaginder Hollander, I have seen it many times.
It is upsetting to see so many politicians adopt music as their anthems, usually without the consent of the composers.
