Am I doing something wrong? [I Dont Like Small Talk]

When I pray then read the bible
I feel worse then when I don't
Why do you suppose that is ?

I know we aren't supposed to pay much attention to our feelings but it's odd for me ..again ..just trying to learn ,grow and understand...

Of course no one is going to have a definitive answer.

BUT, maybe in your prayer and reading you unwittingly scratch up some guilt feelings that you feel you need to atone for. When you don't pray or read - those feelings don't surface.

My thought is to let guilt go. God sent His Son to atone for your sins.
Pray, read, worship God with joy.

My two cents.

@Budwick Thank you
Well depending on which parts of the Bible you are reading it can be extremely immoral and in several places will try to dehumanize people and break them down psychologically only to try and build them back up in its own image. Religious leaders, cults, abusers, etc... do this all the time.
They try to say you are a worthless sinner and deserve every bad thing that happens to you. And when you have internalized that message and believe it they offer to save you from those feelings of hopelessness and unworthiness. So when they end up fixing the problem that they created you will be eternally grateful to the faith for saving you and never leave it and even die for it.

@canusernamebemyusername I was told if it's not of love it's not of God
@SW-User That was actually the way I was taught as well growing up. But after reading for myself I saw God do a lot of evil, lie and breaking his own laws in the Bible. Particularly the old testament. I'm not a believer now but if I was a Christian I think the gnostic Christians are closer to the truth. They believe the old testament God is a being called a demiurge which is the creator of the world but is not the real God. And therefore because the demiurge is ignorant of the true God his own creation is imperfect as well. I'd recommend trying to read the Nag Hammadi. Trying being a key word cause the scriptures are so damaged large chunks are missing. But the early church was out to kill all other forms of early Christianity and so the Nag Hammadi scriptures were hidden in a clay jar for 17 centuries or so.

But following the God is love verse is Def a good core belief to center your faith around. Just disregard the evil parts. Also remember that a tree will be known by the fruit it bears. Also many false christ have gone out into the world. There are lots of good verses that would make good core beliefs.

@canusernamebemyusername I choose the love parts ..nothing good can come out of doing evil..not ever

Understandable.

For me, I feel sad when I pray. It feels to me that God is a hypocrite at times.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@SW-User Kinda.

But let's say a person has no place to live and it's not his fault. He keeps moving around constantly and can't keep up with the rent but those who did wrong get it right.

What would you say in this instance? I mean I still believe in him. But that belief seems to be diminishing.

@Beatbox34 sometimes God wants you to learn a lesson ..he is not an instant gratification God either ..

@SW-User I understand.

Thank you though.

We aren't supposed to pay attention to our feelings? I get told just the opposite!

Anyway, I had the same thing happen to me with prayer and Bible reading. It's fairly common, and some people consider it a form of spiritual oppression.

@SW-User interesting

It's a book that tells you that you are inherently a piece of shit and you have no chance of not being that way without very specific help that not everyone can achieve.

I'd feel sad too if I read books like that.
SW-User
@Dolimyte I see your point
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
Hmmm not sure. Is it filling a void that perhaps you feel more when you stop reading and praying?
SW-User
@Ambroseguy80 That's a good question..I must think on that more

Some parts of the Bible are depressing. I suggest you use a devotional guide that will help you in your prayer life and identifying more helpful scriptures. There are a number of daily devotionals online. Try several until you find one that is helpful.

@exexec Thank you

@SW-User You are welcome. I hope you find what you need.
The Bible will show us exactly who we are.
@SW-User how?
SW-User
@NoGamesTolerated it's confusing
@SW-User The Bible says the word is spiritual and must be spiritually discerned.
“It is time that we admitted that faith is nothing more than the license religious people give one another to keep believing when reasons fail.”
