I Do Not Understand Racist People

Telling jokes about Asians eyes or their skin color isn't funny. It seems like it's mostly Caucasian people making jokes about us like how can we read with our eyes. OUR EYES ARE THE SAME SIZE AS YOURS! Our epicanthic fold just makes our eyes smaller.

I can't stand people who make racist jokes and I call them out that they are a racist. However, they respond it was a racist joke, there's a difference.

Oooooooh, come on now... Don't act like Asians aren't super racist toward other Asians... If I had a dollar for every time I heard a Japanese person shit-talking Chinese people...

@SakuraShimeji Ah, so you're just trolling. Got it. You need to work on that. You were doing really well until you took that suicide turn. You can't go full-on ridiculous or you give yourself away. You need to stay believable.

@SakuraShimeji You're talking about repeated bullying. Do I actually give off the impression of a bully? I joke with my friends, usually about my friends, and they joke back. Because we're comfortable with each other and ourselves.
I certainly don't think that it's mostly people who are Caucasian who are making jokes about people who are Asian, that my friend is a racist remark in and of itself.

In some Asian countries, many people have plastic surgery to remove their Epicanthic fold, and to remove some of the material in the eyelid. As well, Asian people are not the only people who have an Epicanthic fold. I am not Asian myself, and yet I have an Epicanthic fold.

No matter your race or ethnicity, skin color, country of origin, nationality there will always be others who will find humor, racist and not in who you are. Caucasians, people of African decent, Asians, East Asians, South Americans, Slavic, Middle Eastern and so on and so on.

You can either choose to be butthurt, you can ignore it, or you can choose to see humor in whatever it is that is being said. Personally, the world is a far better place when you choose to either ignore that type of thing, or see the humor in it if in the form of humor. If it's blatant racism then you can always respond, or as the Native North Americans practiced with their children when they displayed behavior they did not wish to promote, nor did they condone they would ignore the person as if they did not exist.

What I don't feel is right, is to say one race is more prejudiced than another, no matter the race. You cannot possibly know this unless you can cite research that was done on this subject.

You might find this map of the world, and the study that was done that specifically relates to racism interesting:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2325502/Map-shows-worlds-racist-countries-answers-surprise-you.html

If you look at that map, the top countries in the world, that score the lowest on racism happen to also be countries more populated by Caucasians. That is a fact, and I just cited it. You might try the same when posting things of an inflammatory nature.

It all depends, honestly. I have gone to comedy shows where the comedian was pointing out stereotypical things about specific races, and even so those people of those races who were sitting in the audience were enjoying themselves and laughing. It depends on the context. If it was obviously meant as a racist attack on you personally that is one thing, but if it was said, even if it was tasteless, as humor then instead of taking offense, you might try to understand instead how it was intended.

Humans only communicate about 17% of what they say with words alone. Inflection of voice, eye contact, body language, context etc express far more. If you are only going to take the words, and not the context then you cannot state it was intended as a racist remark.

Why don't you tell us the context of what was said, and what it was that was said that has offended you so greatly. Perhaps then we might better understand your remark.

But remember, stating " It seems like it's mostly Caucasian people making jokes about us" is in and of itself a racist remark as well as biased, prejudiced and unqualified.

Racism isn't ever a joke, and people who try to xcuse their bad behaviour by calling it joking are simply not worthy of respect from anyone. And in truth, the only people who give them any are others who are just as bad. They all seem to think that it's great to be respected by so many, but none of them realize that the respect is hate based. If I can't get respect based on something more deserving than hate, then I'd rather be a hermit and live away from everyone.

I actually wonder what is a proper way to say I like "mongoloid" eyes in English. Everything that comes to my mind is considered racist. Even mongoloid.
What is the right expression then?
Serenitree · F
@CrazyMusicLover Mongoloid eyes is really an apt description and shouldn't be taken as insulting. Many Asians have eyes like the Mongols.

oid is a suffix meaning “resembling,” “like,” used in the formation of adjectives and nouns (and often implying an incomplete or imperfect resemblance to what is indicated by the preceding element): alkaloid; anthropoid; cardioid; cuboid; lithoid; ovoid; planetoid. Compare -ode1. Origin of -oid. Greek.

@Serenitree The problem with Mongoloid is that this term has been somehow associated with down syndrome in the past.
Serenitree · F
@CrazyMusicLover I know, and that is simply because someone misunderstood why the word mongoloid was used. Down Syndrome people have almond shaped eyes, much like the Mongols. Thus, mongoloid. Meaning like the Mongols, but not exactly.

The fact is, Negro seems to be a dirty word these days yet Negro (plural Negroes) is a term traditionally used to denote persons considered to be of Negroid heritage, . a member of a dark-skinned group of peoples originally native to Africa south of the Sahara. It has various equivalents in other languages.

I used to think it was the most polite word to use, and no more offensive than Asian or Caucasian. But I've been set straight on that subject.

@SakuraShimeji No I don't give those for myself. I wouldn't try and excuse someone else's behavior. Just a failed attempt to understand the motives of some troll on the internet.

Most of us tell jokes about people who are different from us. Often even about people who come from a different city. I don't think we can ever ban it and there's a different between some light hearted humor and actual racism.
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
@SakuraShimeji I don't agree. We Dutch make many jokes about our Belgian and German neighbors and they do the same about us. Most of us can just laugh about it and it's no big deal.

@SakuraShimeji yeah, you know, here in Canada, every province is guilty of making fun of people in other provinces, for the way they speak, or, well, I guess it's mostly for the way they speak, but often for their driving habits and other things too.
