I Have A Funny Friend

My friend says she doesn't like calling black people black and only calls them "African-American". So I asked her what she calls white people and she said, "white".

So I told her, "then you should call the white people European American if you call the black people African American."

She said no.

What are your thoughts, people of SW? (Not my problem, just a little funny random chat we have, and my responses are joking around as I always do)

@MalteseFalconPunch Dam, that's alot, lol. I just simplified races as black, white, hispanic, and asian/pacific islander. Didn't really feel the need to give a name of country of origin. In short, naming by color (I'm trying to say this in the least offensive way possible, and its going to offend someone anyway 😥).

Idk how about this? Call people by their name and not their color.
I know it was a joke though..
Your friend is an unthinking idiot. Those are my thoughts

I think opinions are like belly buttons - everybody has one. You can't really get away without offending someone now days - especially on matters of race. I think whatever your friend is comfortable using is her choice. Your point is an interesting one however in terms of her future behaviour worry more about her intent than her word choices

Get over it. Many black people don't like being called African-American. Jessie Jackson started it 25 years ago.

@Svirfneblin i meant it as a joke for naming races. Its not a problem, but a funny scenario that I wanted to share on SW.

Oh. Sorry. I missed the funny. Move along. 🤡

Is every white American of European descent?
SW-User
@MarkPaul what 'whites' aren't of European descent?
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@SW-User Some examples are some people from South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
SW-User
@MarkPaul true, but the ultimate descent is European isn't it? You've got me trawling my brain now :-D
Race is a fabrication used to keep people separated.

Hmmmmmmm or she can call em by their name
Racially, black is just as valid a term as white is. At some point she’s going to meet a black person who doesn’t use the term “African-American” because they’re West Indian or can actually identify their African country of origin—or they’re a black person from yet another country, other than the U.S.A. That will be an education for her. She has prejudices she’s unaware of.
