Why is Greenland called Greenland, when it's white and covered with ice?

I'm just curious
revenantF
When it was discovered by the Norwegians, or was it the Danes ? it was green then..change of climate.

But many say it was a publicity stunt only to attract business馃

@Mugin16 Oh you know your history ! damn ! I was intrigued by the fact that no trace of them subsidied , not even bones, and houses did not reveal anything untoward :)

@revenant If I remember correctly, after a glacier receded they found some old Viking houses in Greenland.
revenantF
@Mugin16 wow I did not know that !
InquisatorM
It was a marketing stunt, It was named by Eric The Red, who was forced in exile, he who hoped the name would attract more vikings so he could gather an army
InquisatorM
@SW-User Greenland was not a very attractive place to be, and Eric had made some serious enemies back home, but he did manages to gather 25 ships on iceland a few years later, but only 14 of them made it to greenland

@Inquisator Impressive

@SW-User His son Leif would later were the first to explore Vinland ( Newfoundland) in North America
