Why is Greenland called Greenland, when it's white and covered with ice?

I'm just curious

When it was discovered by the Norwegians, or was it the Danes ? it was green then..change of climate.

But many say it was a publicity stunt only to attract business馃

@revenant Erik the Red who gave Greenland its name was a Norwegian viking who came to Iceland. After committing a murder, he had to leave and he decided to go to Greenland where he lived for some time. When he returned he was looking for colonialists to settle the island and he came up with a marketing plot of calling it "Greenland".

That happened in 985 AD when it was warmer than now and there was more arable land in Greenland than now.

@Mugin16 thank you Mugin ! And if I remember correctly a very cold season happened and all of a sudden..no trace of the colonialists ! It is said that it is possible that the indigenous people took care of them.

@revenant The Medieval Warm Period gave way to the first stages of the Little Ice Age after 1300. Greenland got much colder, the growing seaons much shorter, arable land was covered by ice. Less food meant less resistance to diseases and the Inuit also killed some of the Vikings. Contact to Norway was lost and the Viking colonies disappeared.

@Mugin16 Oh you know your history ! damn ! I was intrigued by the fact that no trace of them subsidied , not even bones, and houses did not reveal anything untoward :)

@revenant If I remember correctly, after a glacier receded they found some old Viking houses in Greenland.

@Mugin16 wow I did not know that !
