Why is Greenland called Greenland, when it's white and covered with ice?

It was a marketing stunt, It was named by Eric The Red, who was forced in exile, he who hoped the name would attract more vikings so he could gather an army

@SW-User Greenland was not a very attractive place to be, and Eric had made some serious enemies back home, but he did manages to gather 25 ships on iceland a few years later, but only 14 of them made it to greenland
