There are a lot of guides on how to safely hitchhike if you're serious then you should do some reading and maybe find a veteran hitchhiker online to talk to for advice. Like anything else its a skill and you can be good or bad at it.

Carry a gun with you, and I'm not talking about a small pink .22 caliber pea shooter.

Carry an axe with you and wear a smile... and sensible shoes.
