Why is college so expensive, like if you were in college in the 90's or before it was cheaper

If student loan debt were dischargeable in bankruptcy, tuition costs would drop dramatically.

@ViciDraco that's right..
And universities would need to lower tuition to a point where the students could pay it out of pocket by working part time..
That's how it was in the sixties..
State college could be paid by parents without loans..

@SW-User you realize in the sixties it was the government covering most of college expenses. Over time, as costs continued to rise and taxes were going down on the wealthy, the federal grants were reduced in favor of the federally backed loans we have today.

People also earned less money back then.

@SweetMae So now that we have more money they want to rob college students or for the parents of college students to pay more? I mean if they want to encourage students to actually go to and stay in college cant they not be as expensive. In India college is free but you have to pay for public school, uniform,and textbooks.

1) Easy to get loans means they can charge more without driving people away
2) People essentially NEED college education for many of the living wage jobs. It is true that we have a growing need in trades which can be educated for more cheaply, but even if we filled those at 100% the need for college education would still be outrageously high.
3) Supporting industries work with the colleges to funnel money through to others as well. Instead of using the same text book until the information is out of date, they cycle the same information into different orders each year to keep people buying new textbooks.

@ViciDraco With textbooks Ive learned not to ever use to the university book store, them unibook store trying to rip you off.
