Why is college so expensive, like if you were in college in the 90's or before it was cheaper

If student loan debt were dischargeable in bankruptcy, tuition costs would drop dramatically.

@SW-User only because attendance would.

The school doesn't give a damn if you pay your loan or not. The bank does. If student loans could be discharged in bankruptcy, banks would no longer service them.

And universities would need to lower tuition to a point where the students could pay it out of pocket by working part time..
That's how it was in the sixties..
State college could be paid by parents without loans..

@SW-User you realize in the sixties it was the government covering most of college expenses. Over time, as costs continued to rise and taxes were going down on the wealthy, the federal grants were reduced in favor of the federally backed loans we have today.
