The question could be ... what is your "net wealth"?
If one has 3 million of assets and a million dollar debt ... they are in GREAT SHAPE!
If one has $20,000 of assets and $12,000 of debt ... they are in a challenging spot and feel underwater
It is not the size of the debt, it is the net wealth "feeling"
*Note: It does not work that way in Canada or Europe

I learned the hard way to never, ever have a joint account. So yeah, but it's not obscene. Way more than I'd want to have over my head though.
