I Am Against Slavery Of All Kinds

I don't understand why some U.S. citizens say America was great during the time of slavery. Do these people even think at all? I don't know how keeping someone as a slave up until the abolition of slavery, selling them, beating them, treating them like cattle, and working them to death would constitute to America being great during that time in history.

@dark548 agreed. I was just playing with the definition of "great". History is a mixture of good and bad. We can't really judge any period in history as completely good or completely bad. We can, however, praise the good things and condemn the bad. Even though the ancient Romans did bad things they also did good things. Same for today.

We could say the same thing about the current U.S. The massive prison system is essentially using slave labor, still. Our body count is pretty damn high, for a modern country, too. Among other things. Does that make all the things we have accomplished meaningless?
