I Experienced Racism

I went to the Mexican barber shop by my house a few months ago. I used to like going to the Mexican Barber shops because they take their time and give you a good hair cut for a fair price. I like the way they line everything up. The atmosphere is usually friendly and I a appreciate the culture. At 10 am I entered. I asked if I could get a hair cut. There was only one guy in the shop working. He directed me to the chair then said wait a minute. He stepped outside. I waited and waited. After over 5 minutes, I stepped out and their he was smoking a cigarette. He just looked through me. This is not the first time I have been denied service at a Mexican barber shop. It has happened at two other places on my street. My neighborhood is not Mexican. It is changing but it is still mostly Italian, Polish, and Irish. I got the message. I left. I love my long grey hair. Thank you for helping me that day.

I lived in Georgia in the 80's. Being from Boston I recognized the deep racism that was everywhere down south. It was the first time in my white life I had experienced that kind of hatred being aimed at me. The honky, cracker, and names I can't repeat here. Standing in the MARTA station waiting for a bus...was scary...sometimes the only white face in the crowd...and a northerner as well...I was tortured the whole time I was there. It was an eye opener...I got to feel what people of color have felt from white people since we kidnapped them from their homeland. I got it. I wish everyone could FEEL it the way I did...things might be different then

I once drove up to the McDonalds drive through window off MLK BLVD in Lansing Michigan, and ordered a container of chocolate milk and a black coffee and a hamburger, and the black girl at the window gave them to me, saying, "And here is your WHITE milk with chocolate in it, and here is your hamburger on a WHITE bun."

I didn't report her, but I have told the story several times online.
@4meAndyou Change doesn't start with walking away. Perhaps her manager would have listened. People in retail need to be courteous and respectful. They are hired to take care of people and to serve them. She was out of line. And she will continue to be that way. She is a sad, angry person. McDonalds where I live would always listen to their customers. This is true even in large cities.

@PoetryNEmotion Well, it happened eight years ago, and it's a little bit like 20/20 hindsight, isn't it? But perhaps if I were not afraid I would behave differently now and stand up and speak.
@4meAndyou It is a choice. Have a good day.

I have experienced racism as well as "hate speech" and denial of service because of my sexual orientation.
xixgun · M
@ianR0ckwell Sorry. Got a little confused. Yes, it's BS that they do not see the hypocrisy of their statements

@xixgun You went to P town. Provincetown. The ex and I wanted to stay down there for the weekend and I was researching rooms and found some nice ones with a jacuzzi in the room. I didn't know the peeps there were "that way".

@4meAndyou Yes ma'am, you are correct.

Sir no disrespect . Mexican is an ethnicity not a race. And is it possible dude was just on a break or lazy? He was rude I agree. If he was on break he should have communicated that to you and told you how long it would be .
SW-User
You’re welcome :) Maybe a sign. Don’t cut your hair haha @ianR0ckwell
That is the way I took it

I like long hair. I often say the universe is telling me something when things go differently than I’d planned. @ianR0ckwell

That's not racism; it's the addictive power of nicotine.
@MarkPaul lol....I am a great tipper... I always tip well after spending time as a waiter...
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@ianR0ckwell You want me to ask him for you what his deal is then?
Fernie · F
@ianR0ckwell we only have your side of the story. By your own words here you're oblivious to what whites put Mexicans through every day...especially now that we have that moron trump inciting racism and demonizing immigrants...or you just don't care about it. Poor you! His behavior makes sense to me and we have no idea how YOU acted towards HIM now do we?

I think everyone should at least experience racism or be on the receiving end of it. No race/religion should ever be put on a pedestal
xixgun · M
@Gangstress How about, no one experience it, instead?
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@xixgun unfortunately that would require a perfect world.

Yesterday, I helped fix some potholes in the road and several people who drove by tooted lol their car horns. I call rasism and sexism
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@SW-User That was appreciation.

Oh lol @MarkPaul
Why did he treat you that way? What colour is your skin? Not that it should matter. Did you speak to him? Did you tell him you will find another shop?
@PoetryNEmotion I am white. I contacted the owner who is a nice guy. He apologized. The guy no longer works there. I gave them a horrible review but took it down because I did not want the shop owner to suffer due to this employee. Before the incident , I had recommended people to go his shop. I was honest with the owner that I would not go back. If and when I get my next hair cut, It will probably be in the suburbs. I actually like my long wavy grey hair. I feel like a viking. My wife thinks I look homeless but that is okay.
@ianR0ckwell You must do what you think is right. Perhaps you should have confronted the barber? Made it clear that this behaviour is intolerable. I wonder how many whites actually experience racism like this? I think other races are far more treated poorly than the whites. I hate when people yell the race card. It seems to be popular. Stand up for your race. Confront prejudice when it is safe to do so. And do complain to those to whom it matters when it occurs. You can make a difference. As for your hair? Wear it in whatever style makes you feel comfortable. I know grey hair tends to be thin as it is less than a regular colour in texture. Don't let it look scraggly, man.
My hair is thick.. wavy and soft...It actually looks good.. my wife is a badge bunny.. she likes the military look..not the aging rock star thing..
