What's your experience/opinion with Ford vehicles, if any?

My family has had 4 in our history...an Aerostar, a Taurus, an Escort, and a Escape...and all of them had major transmission problems 🤷‍♂️.
gregloa · 61-69, M
GM cars and trucks have always had the worst transmissions. Every GM I’ve ever had the transmission went out. Owned Fords for quite some time now. Never had a transmission go out on a Ford. That also goes for starters, alternators, water pumps. etc. The government didn’t bail out Ford either. Everyone is going electric now. Fords Mach-E is teslas only real competition. Nothing else comes close.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@gregloa My sister did have a 2001 Malibu where the transmission wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. I have an '09 and hope it turns out to be a much better car.

Every car has its weak points.
It pays to do your research.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
@chrisCA I never had any major finicky breakdowns. I did lose an exhaust system in Oban, Scotland when driving through there. But then again, I was not operating it in a Canadian climate either.
chrisCA · M
@CanadianTraveller I knew a guy who owned a Renault Alliance. I thought it was a nice little car.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
@chrisCA My brother had one in Montreal.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I'm in England so our Ford vehicles are different.
I've owned an old Capri......awful in the wet as it would slide if you hit the brakes hard.

A Cortina Mk5. Lovely car. Had it ten years. Repairs were simple and inexpensive when required.

An Escort Mk.3. Bit of a gas guzzler but other than that it was fine.

Currently running a Fiesta TDCi Regarded as a fuel efficient 'Supermini'.
Bought at auction at two years old. Pretty good price.
Had to fix a leaky seal in the sunroof but other than that has been a nice little motor.

SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2 I've read that the European version of the Ford Escort was much better than ours in the States. I'm not shocked at all 😆.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@SubstantialKick Reading the comments and i'm wondering why the disparity in build quality ?

European cars have to hit certain safety standards; certain fuel efficiency standards; certain emissions standards. Been that way for a long time now.

Most production lines here are automated so Ford European workers only number around 12,000 these days

That is a very good question, lol.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
I have had good experiences with Fords. But I haven't owned on in a long time.
bookerdana · M
@SweetMae T bird needed 4 but it may not have been al the cars fault...it always broke on the road till the last time,my mechanic fished out parts of the previous starters;it had a separate housing..what a noightmare🤦‍♀️
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@bookerdana Some parts are not made as well as others.
bookerdana · M
@SweetMae True but only my mechanic knew you had to take off the starter housing..he hated Fords😜
WillaKissing · 56-60
I have had a GMC pick up, a Honda accord, a Toyota pick up, and multiple Ford pick ups. My Ford pick ups have all been extremely reliable and trust worthy. Never owned a Ford car or sedan.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
F.O.R.D. means Fix Or Repair Daily right?

I had a Ford Galaxy 500 when I was a teen, but other than friends with F150 who speak very highly of them, I have no experience.
@CanadianTraveller or Found On Road Dead
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
YUP same with my dads ford
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@DeluxedEdition Apparently Chevy trucks have a transmission problem as well
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@DeluxedEdition Mom had to get the transmission replaced on a Ford Escape for $4,000 around 7 years ago.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@SubstantialKick my dad changed the transmission and it went out again. but honestly if your transmission goes out get rid of it. don't put a down payment for a transmission because 9/10 the car is always messed up anyway and breaks down again in less than a week
my brother had one as a company car years ago. was never impressed by their product. I wouldn't work for a company unless they gave me a Mercedes as a company car
@MrBrownstone don't see a lot of Fords in the parking lot at Louis Vuitton
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@saragoodtimes What about Victoria’s Secret?
@MrBrownstone they're at the everyday malls. see all kinds of cars there
iamnikki · 31-35, F
I hear only the trucks are good. Not sure why
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@DeluxedEdition They announced it in late 2018...
“We are committed to taking the appropriate actions to drive profitable growth and maximize the returns of our business over the long term,” Ford CEO and President Jim Hackett said at the time. That means an end for the Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Taurus and C-MAX.Nov 26, 2018
gregloa · 61-69, M
@carpediem still make the mustang
carpediem · 61-69, M
@gregloa Absolutely true. I stand corrected.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
There are reasons many Americans won't have a domestic brand. Their quality is lacking compared to Korean and most Japanese vehicles.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Crazywaterspring that and they don't support American workers
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@carpediem True. Brazilian motors, Italian transmissions and Canadian seats.
carpediem · 61-69, M
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Had a Probe in 1993. No issues, but I did have to deal with a lot of “anal Probe” jokes from friends, lol
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@AthrillatheHunt I've seen a couple of those in the past 5 years. One was running like a top, the other sounded like it was running on half its 4 cylinders...lol.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@SubstantialKick I’ve never had a Toyota or Honda but camrys and civics seem to last forever.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@AthrillatheHunt My previous car was a Camry. She was a good girl.

I have a Raptor and haven't had any problems with it. Besides I don't always drive good. The only things I've had to have fixed are things I've torn up.
usher · 41-45, F
I've had a very successful experience with all my ford cars to date. My Focus is so good I've had it since 2007. Never given me any real trouble.
MrsKatherineArch · 41-45, F
We just traded in my third Ford product on something else. I never had any issues with them, other than routine things.
jackson55 · M
Ford, GM and Chrysler all seem to have their share of transmission issues.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@jackson55 Ford had issues with the PowerShift transmission in the Focus, and then GM and Chrysler also had issues with their 8 speed and 9 speed transmissions, respectively...so yep. @jackson55
jackson55 · M
@SubstantialKick The focus has a dual clutch system that they never seemed to get the programming right. It’s a Getrag transmission so there’s no excuse. The 10 speed that GM and Ford share have programming issues as well.
Elessar · 26-30, M
They tend to be fragile/permalous cars, afaik. But I suppose it depends on the model / price range.
jimjim1969 · M
Had a Taurus. Went though 3 transmissions in less then 75,000 miles. Paint was gone, Would never buy a Ford
SW-User
Every Ford I’ve owned had electrical issues and quirks.
I’ve been a Mopar/Dodge owner since 2004
Fantabulous · 46-50, F
I have no first hand experience but did have 3 lots of friends whose Fords set alight... so no thank you!!
Striker · M
I don't care for the cars but love the trucks.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@Striker Yeah, I think the trucks are cool.
CanadianTraveller · 56-60, M
My Volvo XC90 SUV was actually American made by Ford.
I don't know I only know youtubers who have Fords.
we have everest. it's cute
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Never owned one.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Good overall. The classic V8s like the 302/351 use oil like a mf-er. Motorcraft batteries suck. The 4.6 kicks ass. That's about it. Edit: the 3.8l 6 is good, too.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@SubstantialKick Yah, time for new rings....ya think?
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@uncalled4 And probably valve guides, too 😆.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@SubstantialKick Ha. All I'll say is that if you fill up a 302 on the way home, it will have 3/4 of a tank the next time you back out of your driveway lol.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I've no real experience or opinion with them. Lot of people have what seems to be an illogical brand loyalty to them, so people like to make fun of them with jokes like Found On Roadside Dead and such. But I've never really had a problem with one.
