What's your opinion on fur farms?

I never really thought too much about it. My new home is next door to a mink farm. They got hit by an animal liberation extremists group a few weeks ago. They let I think 200-600 mink out of their cages. The majority of them ended up dying. I'll have to learn more before I form any opinions about it.

If it's a sustainable farm, you're reduced to the moral right/wrong dichotomy of killing for fur. I don't even know where I stand on it. However, many of these "animal liberation" groups seem to not understand about animal survival, and several (most notoriously, PETA) have a "better dead than in captivity" mindset.

@raysam363 is that their reasoning behind releasing animals that are unable to fend for themselves

@morrgin Sometimes, but from a personal perspective I just think they don't plan ahead or even realize that farm animals lack survival skills in the wild. They take a "moral high ground" in freeing the animals, whatever happens later is just nature to them.

They've had similar problems with fur-farms in the past, in Britain; where mink released by vandals have survived in the wild and become serious predators on native species not attuned to them.

As far as I know, there are now no fur farms in the UK, but I may be wrong.

Allies to this are the so-called "re-wilding" and similar romantics who think because a country used to have wolves or wild boar until hunted into extinction several centuries ago, these animals need to be re-introduced. They are unable to see that the wildlife has adapted to not having such creatures around.

It may work somewhere, but it's become disastrous elsewhere, such as the Forest of Dean (England) where the introduced wild boar population has become much too big and very destructive - but the moment anyone says they need culling, the "animal rights" brigade scream blue murder against it.

These extremists know nothing about animals. They just care about themselves and being in the limelight just for the sake of the news. I don’t really like caged animals, but when you set them free, look after them.

People used to free mink around where I live. Now they are the top predator in the countryside and kill all the native wildlife 😕

I've read, heard and thought enough about fur farms...to know that I find them sickening and ethically unacceptable.

Minks are angry little creatures.
morrgin · F
@abe182 are they?

@morrgin yes. YouTube it
The idea troubles me, but the extremists, folks who rush in half-cocked, often make things worse for all concerned—as in that case. 😒
