I Support Humanitarian Work

Two young men's lives hang in the balance, please sign this letter to the president of Bali.Their plea for mercy has again been denied. They could be executed by firing squad any days now.See the whole story here.

These two men have proven that they can make a difference in the world. Yes they made a mistake years ago, but I don't believe any mistake is worth paying ones life for. Perhaps there will be a last minute reprieve from the courts in Indonesia.

I think that if Indonesia goes through with these executions there will be increased political tensions between Indonesia and Australia, and I don't think either country wants that.
This came through on Yahoo news this morning,

https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/26467267/jokowi-open-to-views-on-executions-ahok/

Jakarta has the ball in its court at the moment and I think they are using it to make a point, particularly after revelations last year over the Australian spy agency phone-tapping Indonesian officials last year and issues over Australia taking a hard line on refugee boats from Indonesia. I would like to think Indonesia is holding their ace card and applying some political pressure for as long as they can and will hopefully give these two life once they feel their point has been made.

Thank you for that article, yes it is all to do with politics and the tendency in many instances to follow the "letter" of the law above the "spirit "of the law.
alan61a
I hope Indonesia follows the 'spirit' of the law. And at some point, hopefully sooner than later, does away with the death penalty.

I'm not condoning anything but why be ringleaders of drug trafficking in a country where its illegal and execution is the penalty.
MistyGoddess
I understand, but at same, while that is commendable, changing ways etc its a bit like those who 'turn to Christianity' which is good too but makes one wonder if its due to being incarcerated or just to avoid the consequences of their actions.
I wonder if a similar petition to get rif of the Islamic extemists would help, those pictures which circulated the internet showing women's throats cut, with bucketc collecting their blood and the father holding his headless baby, upset me greatly... thise are truly innocent people suffering greatly on others whims.
Also, the picture of 2 guys hanging from a crane...that is beyond words.
So, l wonder if a petition to rid the earth of this scum would do anything, but probably not, as this will continue, l suppose, like everything else does.

Sadly no petition can get rid of psychopaths and the religions behind which they hide and the religious views and beliefs they use to justify their actions. Those extremists which are mostly psychopathic make their own religious rules and no one it seems is the wiser, you only have to look at the spanish inquisition, the crusades, the death of thousand of South Americans and the destruction of their culture by the Spanish conquistadors in the name of their Christian religion,to realise that they made their own rules, when one of the commendments in their bible was "THY SHALL NOT KILL" The same goes with the Koran,I am sure it does not advocate mass murder of people who have a different religion and set of beliefs. Those extremists want total power and control. It it the same with most other religions or cults. No petition can stop that.No petition can stop evil. The only thing that can stop evil is a change in human consciousness and people waking up to themselves, but sadly I do not see this happening any time soon as the world priorities are NOT spiritual.
Yes, it is well known that some prisoners turn to religion to try to reduce their sentences and avoid the death penalty and the "getting of religion" seems a good cop out.But those two men were an exception as they truly and consistently helped other inmates, one by teaching art and orientating participating co inmates toward a positive outcome and the other giving consistent support and counselling and that to the last as it was reported that Andrew Chan gave moral support to the other condemned men as they were marched to their death all singing the hymn "amazing grace"and all refusing to wear a blindfold. No one pretending could have that kind of courage.
MistyGoddess
I still think laws should be obeyed but that you for your reply and l agree with the part about the world not being spiritual. It took me a while to understand that perhaps the evil in this wprld is meant to ne so that we all experience the duality of lova/hate, good/evil.
The evil is winning, though that's for sure, amd it does seem that now amount of praying helps, its actually what one does that matters.
If Mr Chan and is friend truly are sorry and their actions inside reflect this, l do hope they are at peace now.
The world sure needs mercy and love, that's for sure.

i don't undderstad. i thought they are to die for heroin smuggling. but this group -- so were they doing humanitarian work instead?
berangere · 80-89, F
They did smuggle heroin in Bali nearly ten years ago and have been in prison since, but they have become different people helping the other inmates towards rehabilitation, one of them has become a proficient artist who now teaches others to become creative and does occupational therapy, the other one has developed an ability to counsel and give support to others, also helping in their rehabilitation. If kept alive and in jail they could be of great help to many, dead they are to none.

oooh. thanks for telling me. what a crying shame to lose such people.

And don't have a right to kill anyone in these circumstances.

I feel an overwhelming sadness
MistyGoddess
Oh, yes, it is sad, very sad, that supposedly well educated men cannot read and follow the policies of the country they are in.
Mercy were mercy due, not for deliberately breaking the law.
berangere · 80-89, F
Yes,I see your point. But the law in Indonesia is a bit arbitrary and subject to politics.
MistyGoddess
Ok, but surely breaking the law in a country and paying the consequences for it has nothing to do with politics. Like visiting Saudi Arabia and possessing/consuming/selling alcohol when everyone knows the penalty for that, if caught.
