What do you feel should be done about the misuse of guns in the US?

(This question is not just aiming for the side that feels guns should be banned. If you honestly feel other methods can be taken, share an opinion.)

There is no practical way to remove guns of any kind from the public. There are simply too many out there and the insecurities of Americans are too deeply joined to owning guns. So the problem has to be addressed through the owners. Make any crime committed with a firearm an extra 10 years if found guilty. But by itself that will achieve little. Then make the registered owner of any gun used in a crime a co conspiritor in that crime. Unless the loss or theft has been reported to the authorities. This will make people a lot more careful how they secure their weapons and report them if lost. And the next time a kid shows up at school with his parents weapon, the parent will be charged. Its a start.

@whowasthatmaskedman there's empirical evidence from other countries that you can have a gun amnesty policy and it works, then maybe sentences like "the next time a kid shows up at school with his parents gun" will not end up in common vernacular

@gol979 I know gun amnesties work. My country had one. But gun ownership was not like being an adult and protecting your family. It was a specialist hobby. like fly fishing. The gun numbers in the US are way too high and having a gun is akin to having a bible in the house.

We don't ban sports cars because a speeding nut doin 140 mph kills someone. We don't ban cars because some drunk kills a family after boozing all night. So banning any gun because someone with hate in their soul kills people is total insanity! Address the real problem...PEOPLE!!!

@JT123 Agreed. We licence people to drive, we regulate the traffic and we prosecute offenders. Accidents still happen and people get hurt and die. But it is controlled in most instances
where I live they have enhanced prison terms

carry a gun with a felony 5 years
fire a gun doing a felony 10 year
kill somebody with the gun - life

we also have a stand your ground law - you can kill somebody if necessary to defend yourself or another person

people have tried to misuse it and gone to trial anyway

so extra time in jail hasn't deterred anybody - just gets them on the street longer.

The problem isn't with guns used for hunting, or for most pistols--the problem is with assault weapons that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Those are the weapons that need to be banned, as they were in the US in the 1990s. Hollow point ammunition designed to inflict maximum damage also need to be banned.

The media is more a problem than the guns they sensationalize their use which encourages more of it, at least in the high profile attacks.

No problem with guns! Bad people will always be bad! Gun rock knife stick .

I think that all guns except for hunting rifles or shotguns and all hand guns except for the old fashioned 1-6 shot models should be banned both in sale and possession. Back when these were the only guns available to the general public, there was still gun violence but it wasn't as widespread and the problem it is today.

It's really hard to say. People should be allowed to have them, but also people misuse them. You get rid of them and crime actually goes up. So what do you do? Hell... gun crime probably goes up if you get rid of guns because you can only take away the guns that are legally owned. So... now u give criminals more power. There is no answer

[c=#008099]Allow rifles to be purchased by those qualified for the actual need of a gun, such as farmers and ranchers.

As it stands right now, the 'street' out-guns anything the police have in their own arsenal. [/c]
