Should the government be able to make laws against polygamy?

On what grounds, if we separate church and state?

Um... there are laws against polygamy.

Polygamy is illegal because of the vast potential for the abuse of women. There are polygamous cult groups hidden in Utah that are actually rejected by the Mormon church. When discovered, as a general rule, such groups are ejected from the state, and they are always ejected from the real Mormon church, as well. They are like the Mormon ISIS without all the killing.

Young girls in such groups are given no choice as to whom they will marry, and some of them are married to older relatives against their will. Women try to escape such conditions, but are then stalked, and not allowed to see their own family still inside the cult. Non cult polygamous groups are known to have a built-in unhappiness factor for the neglected or older women. Some of the women are just there to earn money at secondary jobs to support three or even four households and about 20 children.

What person in their right mind wants more than one spouse nagging at them????

You can't be married to more than one spouse. (Why the hell would anyone want to)

IE I have known some kooks whom LIVED a Polygamist life style. ONE GUY was legally married to one woman...and had a second live with him...and just called her the second wife...In turn knew a Woman whim had one legal married husband, had a second man live with them n just referred to him as the second husband. All consenting adults..To eat his own

Cultures built on monogamy are likely vanish in the long term. Polygamy has been the norm throughout human existence and there's good reason to believe it's a powerful evolutionary tool

@plungesponge lots of great plans from natural selection are illegal based on religion and its influence. It seems to me that, taken to the extreme, if we remove religion from law, we approach anarchy. I think it is insurance companies and a lot of other organizations that require the status quo to continue profits. As long as it is consentual, why make it illegal?

haha well polygamy is illegal to some religions (eg Christianity) but it's legal in others (eg Islam). If we look at what is happening in Europe, it turns out in a democracy you can just breed your political views into the government rather than debate them, so the immigrants who have half a dozen kids are on their way to running those countries.

So I don't think it's strictly a case of religion going against natural selection, it's more that the religions that include evolutionary advantages take over the religions that don't.

I say no. Wouldn't choose it for myself, but others can do what makes em happy far as I'm concerned (ie, voluntarily)
They are the government ,they can make laws about what ever they want
Paloma · 26-30, F
Yeah, because the government decides who can be married.

They shouldn't, but they do..
The laws we have regarding insurance coverage, inheritance, child custody and medical consent are what would have to be changed to accommodate more than one active spouse if polygamy (or polyandry) became legal in most Western countries. Nothing whatsoever to do with religion.
