Should the government be able to make laws against polygamy?

On what grounds, if we separate church and state?

Polygamy is illegal because of the vast potential for the abuse of women. There are polygamous cult groups hidden in Utah that are actually rejected by the Mormon church. When discovered, as a general rule, such groups are ejected from the state, and they are always ejected from the real Mormon church, as well. They are like the Mormon ISIS without all the killing.

Young girls in such groups are given no choice as to whom they will marry, and some of them are married to older relatives against their will. Women try to escape such conditions, but are then stalked, and not allowed to see their own family still inside the cult. Non cult polygamous groups are known to have a built-in unhappiness factor for the neglected or older women. Some of the women are just there to earn money at secondary jobs to support three or even four households and about 20 children.
