What are your thoughts on an Arranged marriage .

An Arranged marriage is a type of marital union where the bride and groom are selected by their families from childhood / They are at last allowed to meet each other at age 21 .

Last time I checked, that's not how arranged marriages works.

I'm okay with arranged marriage, but not with forced marriage.

In India it is more a custom, but not a selection during childhood. The parents/families search for a suitable match and they talk to their son or daughter and they meet each other for a final approval.
Yes,the success ratio is very high.

Good for you sweetie!!

I really have no problem with them. It seems that arranged marriages last longer than western emotion based marriages.

I was thinking the same thing.

That's child marriage fixed very early during childhood. Its one of the vices of our society.Although some might interpret that as a secure future but when the world is affected by modernization, this is one of the backward practices, tending to spoil the future of the women in particular.

I wouldn't like it. I have a friend from India that came to my house crying her head off because her dad wanted her to marry a man 3 or 4 times her age, she was devastated and ran away. It's more like a partnership, there's no love at all.🥀
Mia123 · 41-45, F
😁Anyone I suppose...
ajoite · 51-55, F
I think the fact that it might be just a partnership doesn't bother me so much, more than it is consensual between two adults, which it isn't always, your poor friend, hope she's okay.

@ajoite: She eventually left her father's house and married an American man.

I understand that they have a pretty good survival rate...

Yeah but many times it's because they are afraid to break up, very strong family pressure and culture to remain married. I knew an older lady here in the USA who was pressured to marry an engineer, her mother had cancer and refused to speak to her until she consented to marrying this man that she didn't even know, she married him, her mother died and she felt obligated to keep her word...miserable life and she suffered an auto-immune illness with it's root in stress because of her husband...and this happened here in the USA.
Thanos · 31-35, M
Lol that isn't how it works

As long as neither the groom nor bride are being forced/pressured to marry, are comfortable with that arrangement and won't be met with severe repercussions if deciding to divorce, I don't have anything against it.

It's accepted in certain cultures, but not the way you described it.🤔 Marriages for green cards etc. Also considered as arranged marriages
Paschar · 70-79, M
This may be before your time but I remember cases of Vietnam War Brides who would wed to a G I just to get out of Vietnam .
SW-User
@Paschar: marriage is still the fastest way to get the papers..however,people abused it so much ,the regulations are crazy these days.
ajoite · 51-55, F
Hmmm fairly sure it's much younger than that in some cases
ajoite · 51-55, F
@Paschar: Well this is true, and in some cases the marriage won't go ahead without consent but in some cases it will, depends on where you are from or where you originated from or more specifically the community to which you belong to
Paschar · 70-79, M
@ajoite: Jewish Tradition for example : A Rabbi will have young wife chosen for him
ajoite · 51-55, F
@Paschar: Does that still go on in certain places? I'd have to go to google to confirm numbers but in the UK hundreds of Asian girls go " missing" each year in my country, usually at the age of 12-14
cycleman · 61-69, M
depends who did the arranging! If a lawyer specializing with divorces did it, I wouldn't have appreciated.

Not good, although some do grow to love one another, the romantic idea of love is not prominent in such cultures...
Socialclutz · 36-40, M
I'd say no, but the chances of divorce are so low it might be worth.
Mia123 · 41-45, F
In the modern present scenario, the parents search for the match for their son or daughter and only on the consent and approval of the persons to get married, the families reach to the engagement.
It is not an accidental commitment on emotional impulses.
Spinner · 61-69, M
That's not my understanding.

I don't agree with them
