There are no rules. Peyote who are different sometimes compliment each other more than people who have a similar personality. You just have to go for it and see.

Hubs and I are polar opposites. I sometimes wonder how we survive each other but I’ve learned that our differences compliment each other and keep us balanced.

Yes we're attracted to the opposite but after a few bad relationships with with those you'll realize what u need is different from what u want.

Not trying to be a smart aleck here but it seems that some degree of compatibility is required at some level for a relationship to thrive.

Now, I've assumed a healthy growing, stable relationship. There's plenty of relationships that aren't that.

Do humans ever have total compatibility? Maybe only if someone is a people pleaser or 'yes person.' Seems like it would be like stagnation, no growth or stimulation, in a way.

I need some. We don't need to be identical; it's fine if I'm quiet and he's more outgoing, it's okay if we don't share all the same interests, but we need some basic compatibility otherwise we're just going to end up irritating and frustrating each other.
