Why/Why Not?

We already instantaneously travel to other worlds when we die. Why bother with a futile and expensive secondary means?
SW-User
Waste of money and resources, we should try and slow our extinction on this planet.

@SW-User a single supervolcano, asteroid,or pandemic could nearly wipe us all out. How do we try to fight those?
Ynotisay · M
Seems the benefit of trying to do that would be the technology that comes out of it that could be applied to live on Earth. It's sort of a moot point now though. We're not close to having the ability. With the discovery of liquid water on Mars there may be a glimmer of hope hundreds of years from now though.

@Ynotisay gotta start some time
Ynotisay · M
@ViciDraco Yeah. But I think some time when it's feasible might be the better call. Water. It's all about water.

colonizing is bad
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@SW-User so better to consign ourselves to extinction?
SW-User
@ViciDraco yeah, maybe. if we can't take care of this planet, then we can't take care of any other planet either.

@SW-User 👏👏👏

I wanna go to space.
exexec · 61-69, C
No. It would be unbelievably expensive, even with multinational cooperation. The money would be better spent on saving this planet.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@exexec this planet is doomed. Maybe not in the next hundred years or even thousand but the clock is ticking. Procrastination works until it doesn't
Ynotisay · M
@ViciDraco But if this this planet is 'doomed,' how much sense does it make to go to a moon or planet that can't sustain any life? Why not 'colonize' here on earth to mitigate whatever 'doom' takes place?
exexec · 61-69, C
@ViciDraco I prefer to improve the lives of billions of people instead of saving a few rich folks to continue the species on another planet. Even that will end unless we can escape this solar system before the Sun's life ends.
firefall · 61-69, M
Because everywhere we can get to is a complete shithole* that would require enormously more resources to make viable than we could ever get to there.

*in terms of human-supporting biosphere, that is.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
If we did only the very few could go but it would be cool to do so
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Yeah but keep the fucking billionaires out of it.
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
Yes. We already fucked over this planet, if humans are going to survive we need to at least colonize the moon in preparation for deep space travel
monte3 · 70-79, M
Not unless their are natives we can enslave. What is the fun of colonization if there are not natives to mess with.
The sun might not be around forever.
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
You would never be able to, since God would not allow it.

You would not be able to do it, since we are not able to sustain life in space at the moment.

If you were to do it in the future, hypothetically, after a few generations they would look at us as inferior and destroy us, possibly enslave us.
monte3 · 70-79, M
@MartinTheFirst why would “God not allow it”?
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
@monte3 He gave us authority over earth, as it's written in the scripture. However, he never gave us authority over what's outside of it. If we were to try to claim something he never gave over to us, he would destroy our every attempt. An example of that would be the tower humans tried to build to heaven, and God gave them different languages so they wouldn't be able to continue.

In my own understanding, I am pretty sure if we were to attempt populating space the same thing would happen again.
Genesis 11:4 They now said: “Come! Let us build a city for ourselves and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a celebrated name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered over the entire face of the earth.”

5 Then Jehovah went down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men had built. 6 Jehovah then said: “Look! They are one people with one language, and this is what they have started to do. Now there is nothing that they may have in mind to do that will be impossible for them. 7 Come! Let us go down there and confuse their language in order that they may not understand one another’s language.” 8 So Jehovah scattered them from there over the entire face of the earth, and they gradually left off building the city. 9 That is why it was named Baʹbel, because there Jehovah confused the language of all the earth, and Jehovah scattered them from there over the entire face of the earth.
