I Am A Strict Mom

Well hello everyone this is my first post here and I figure I should say hi in a most appropriate group.

I recently decided to send my kids to private religious schools and the turn around in their behavior and attitudes has been tremendous. The only issue of course was the fight to get them into their uniforms. They still do not like the uniforms and it's an ongoing fight but I do think they are learning they won't win this battle.

I think the uniforms are smart and emphasizes that they are there to learn not to show off for their peers. I am hoping next year it will be less of a struggle!

Uniforms suck. You think mandating the wear of uniforms is a good thing because it teaches them not to show off to their peers, but they aren't learning that way. Once they get out of that school and go to college/work, they'll probably take every chance they get to show off to their peers the clothes they never got to wear. Honestly letting them wear whatever they want will teach them to learn how not to care about what other people think. They can still wear stylish clothing and still realize that they're there to learn. People can wear whatever to college/work and still know that they're there to learn/work.

@crossproduct: Well I guess all I can say is good on you then but most people have to find ways to stand out from their neighbors to get hired
SW-User
@Kathryn05: This is true. What I'm not mentioning is the years of dedication and focus that it took to make it through the toughest subject on campus, and all the supplementary self-study I did starting when I was about 15. My freedom to wear what I want was not free, it was earned through hard work and my reputation as a top-flight and valuable employee with a spotless record. That's how I stood out from the neighbours.

@crossproduct: I can see that. I suppose it's your right. Personally I'd never do that as I think dressing the part is just as important as having the skills and knowledge for the job but I can understand that isn't the only perspective

My children are homeschooled---but it is private, it is religious and there's no worry about showing off to peers! So you *could* say, the basics are very similar 😄
MrsPeterEvans · 31-35, F
@Mindy1976: how old are they?
Mindy1976 · 46-50, F
@MrsPeterEvans: PM?
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Mindy1976: Yes I can see that. I'm just glad personally that I found a school here that fits our values as a family. It gives me a break during the day to see to the home. I think overall it works out well. I totally trust the adults at the school to monitor and discipline my kids when needed

Uniforms are best
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@MasterLee: Oh I agree they are so much better than the trash kids wear now to school! So proper and they look so pretty or handsome in them
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Kathryn05: And they don't break the bank. No need for makeup.
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
Yes thank goodness no need for makeup! My girls of course are not happy about that but they are learning that mommy is the one who makes the decisions in this house
MrsPeterEvans · 31-35, F
What are their uniforms Ma'am?
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@MrsPeterEvans: The younger ones have a plaid jumper dress and the oldest now wears a white blouse and plaid skirt.
MrsPeterEvans · 31-35, F
@Kathryn05: that's similar to what I had. I was in a tunic until 14
MrsPeterEvans · 31-35, F
I had a uniform for school. I think they are best
Pop0159 · 61-69, M
I agree .. .. but as the get older they learn bow to dress appropriately and the social impact of what they wear .. .. ..
Pop0159 · 61-69, M
@Kathryn05: you would need to let the school know what you are doing and why .. they should be willing to go along .. .. ask them to allow them to start the day so they get the feeling of being out of place, separated from the others, shunned both becahse of dislike and jealousy .. .. then bave them pulled from class, desciplined acckrding to school policy, and sent home to change .. .. ..

The exercise will teach them 3 things

1. What tbey think they want is not really as great as they think .. ..

2. Life at school (and generally in public) has standards that they are expected to meet .. ..

3. You have their best interest in mind as you try to guide and protect them .. ..

In the end they will understand everyone wants and expects them to be in uniform .. .. ..
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Pop0159: An interesting idea!
Pop0159 · 61-69, M
@Kathryn05: Sometimes as parents we have to let go of there hands go and let them fall .. .. In this case let them learn for themselves .. .. ..

You obviously want the best chance for your kids do I commend that. I went o a private school the first 8 years. No uniforms how ever but they will likely accept that all are dressed alike and that purpose is to have them all on equal terms in dress. And they can dress as they please while out or at home.
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Swoop62: Exactly yes and above all of that a uniform puts the kids in the right frame of mind. It is something that teaches them that while they are at school the school is in charge of them and they have to obey the school rules
Swoop62 · M
@Kathryn05: Another good point on that as they don't need to be looking at what others are wearing, they already know. :)
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Swoop62: For sure none of that competition that I used to have to endure every end of summer to find the best outfit to stand out
I hated my school uniform. I never liked looking like all the other girls.
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@BeckyStone: We really are!
@Kathryn05: Old ladies looking at old pics. lol
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@BeckyStone: :) That's what our kids would think!
ErinFrisk · 22-25
As a kid who goes to a military school. Putting them there won't change anything. I moved schools and there are still kids who go to here that smoke and curse.
ErinFrisk · 22-25
So is ours but it's still the same. The only difference is we need to sneak around
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@ErinFrisk: Maybe so at your school. I find at the kids school here there are enough adults around that it's pretty hard to do things behind their backs
ErinFrisk · 22-25
That's good on your end. Have fun with that. Maybe my mom will come to her senses eventually
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
Your girls did not like the uniforms? Why not? How did you manage to get them to wear them?
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@Kathryn05: I guess that convinved them to wear their uniforms. Some school uniforms look very nice.
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Mugin16: It did yes and I think they look lovely in theirs
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@Kathryn05: I am sure they do.

Wow, I'm so glad you have that great experience. I have to teach my kids at home cause I can't send them to private school.
ReggieFane · 61-69, M
Do you have sample pics of uniforms ? Or similar. Is there paddling or yardstick or strapping at the school? I fully support all of it.
