Has anyone else experienced working in a call center?

How was your experience?

My manager is very nitpicky.
I'm dreading coming to work tommorow and I haven't even left today.
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
my first job was in a call centre where i was given a script of how to sell viagra not kidding..
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 like i said they did give us a training for an hour daily basis.
Gumba1000 · M
@Lonelymanik I'd train by watching Team America World Police on repeat. Matt Damonnnnnnn
Lonelymanik · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 you can choose the names. there were so many names lol.. it really was fun. i made my first sale to a lady within a week.. It was a night shift for a month. i had my moments lol
Gumba1000 · M
You're a verbal pin cushion in there. Everyone treats you like sh*t and everyone is a backstabber,or suicidal, eventually.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Gumba1000 yea. I guess the only good thing is that isnt outbound and that we only call for one reason. Dont get many irate people.
Gumba1000 · M
@iamnikki That's better.
4meAndyou · F
Yes. I worked in a call center at Harvard Pilgrim Insurance when the ex became disabled. Then I became a call center manager very briefly, and then I went to work for Verizon doing the same thing for a lot more money.

All call centers monitor your calls for adherence to the script you are supposed to follow, to see if you are ticking off all the required things you are supposed to say. Usually once a month they will meet with you and go over one or two calls, and you should always consider that an opportunity to learn and improve yourself.

Your manager has to do what she does, and it is easier on both of you if you let her know you really want to get better at what you do.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@4meAndyou I get that my calls will be monitored. The manager thinks we are being idle too much and not working. What she fails to realize is that, it takes us longer to find who we need to call, and look up what we need to go over with them, then it takes to actually make the call and discuss those things with them. Then, if I do the former, and the patient does not answer, then yes, I will look idle before I didn't speak to a person, I simply held a ringing phone. Then I go back to searching for the next patient. This takes like 5 minutes per patient. She doesn't get that. I have a meeting with the supervisor soon (everyone did).

@iamnikki I don't want to advise you to be dishonest in any way, yet, there are times at work where you have to be a little bit of a hypocrite so that your manager will think you are a team player.

I think if I were in your situation, I would ask your manager how she would deal with the problem you are experiencing. Explain that there needs to be some kind of fix so you can bring your numbers up.

Her job is how to correct inefficiency in job performance, and obviously that is now affecting her numbers and she is catching some poo from HER boss. If you throw it in her lap in a good way, asking for help and advice, she will have to think about what really needs to be done to make everyone's numbers meet expectations.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@4meAndyou Thank you I will ask the supervisor , since my meeting is with her. I will certainly ask how she/ manager (actually the director) would go about it. And the thing is, it isn't affecting my job performance. I'm ahead with my work, she just expects us to be on the phone for the entire 8 hours it seems...not possible, I promise you.

I worked at one for a year and a half, the management were pretty fine to me and started training me to be a team leader. Some campaigns were better than others. Made a few friends. I just kept myself to myself unless needed really and it worked out fine for me.
Dancingxghost · 36-40, M
I did it for almost a year but it was indeed the worst time of my life had to take lots of drugs just to keep up with the pace and it was horrible for such a low paying job
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Oh yes. I'm so sorry. They're awful jobs :(

A nitpicky manager who goes to extreme can go into harassment and it just destroys your mental health and self-confidence.
SW-User
Yep. Worst job ever. Left in my lunch break and didn't go back
Gumba1000 · M
@iamnikki Take the computer/tablet/laptop/magic phone with you to the restroom next time and work there. If your boss Skypes you while there, accuse him/her of sexual harassment and voyeurism. Get them fired. However you might get sacked for being a nutter following my advice.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Gumba1000 that's what i said when I saw the message. Am I supposed to call patients in the bathroom?
Gumba1000 · M
@iamnikki Yeah call them from there. If they ask what the echo noise is just say your microphone got damaged.
Sharky86 · 36-40, M
Yeah, customer service is just like any other office job, doing outbound calls is not cool at all. But there are worse jobs.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Sharky86 yea its outbound, for a hospital. Many worse jobs. I want ome where i dont have to talk to people. But in my experience those are super repetitive and kinda menial

I just stopped going. It was BS.
Chickie · F
It was the worst job ever. I had to deal with abusive callers and if you have depression and anxiety it's better if you don't take that job.
tenente · 100+, M
my sister did. her boss was abusive and controlling. her coworkers were negative and depressed. the pay sucked. it's an awful job.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@tenente yea I cant believe I've lasted 5 months. And within those 5 months, 5 people from my department have either quit or transferred
