What does the term Feminism mean to you?

so many use this word so many ways. lets keep cool headed and give a real definition hm?
YES there will be many

2 currently prominent stances are

to support the advancement of women's rights, in an attempt to achieve total equality for women.

or

A Hostile position, taken by many, that is misdirected hatred that seems obsessed with the idea that we're in the worst possible world, and every straight, man is to blame.

I've always thought feminism had two completely different meanings. The first is the women's rights movement; millions of people working together to save women from abuse, mistreatment, disempowerment, and malignant brainwashing. The second is misdirected hatred that seems obsessed with the idea that we're in the worst possible world, and every straight, white man is to blame.

The former is a beacon of light unto the world, and spreading it at all costs is paramount. The latter is a disease that hurts everyone involved, especially the women and girls that it scares and disempowers.
@BlueVeins I really appreciate this response. you have captured the 2 prevalent ideas around this word.

the positive and the negative..
Bravo!

@BlueVeins That's my biggest criticism of what it's become also.
People are told half truths by misguided people and it becomes a self fulfilling cycle, creating the reality in their minds of what they seek to rid themselves of.

Well, I was born in Yemen, and in my country of birth, feminism was a social movement that sought to earn women the right to go to school and to walk around in public without a male chaperone. So that's usually what I think of when I hear that word.
Platoscave · F
@BlueMetalChick American women very much do NOT have "equal rights". You would have to be living here for a while to really understand and you have to be AVERAGE in abilities to personally feel the discriminations. Exceptional women can always beat the game. But don't be fooled.

but there is a HUGE game still and it is ugly and unjust.

Major pay discrepancy still...

Refusal to hire for bad reasons happens to more women than men

Unjust firings happen MORE for women esp the rank and file sector

Abuse in the workplace is suffered by women WAY more than men.

Mental health in America is more abusive for women than for men.

Women can't find partners like men can. There is much more "minefield" effect with women and most men refuse to acknowledge it but it is soooooo true.

Women have a harder time just trying to live alone and do her own thing. One obstacle is pay discrepancy, the burdens of childrearing and marriage dependency that men just don't experience.

Women have a WAY harder time qualifying for public service positions such as City Manager, Mayor and aldermen.

I could give a hundred more examples.

On the other hand life in Yemen seems to be a literal HELL for most residents.

Like the actual country no longer exists!!

And my country is ultimately responsible for that catastrophe, I should add. Without US support the Saudis would have to revert to less terror and MORE democracy, they would have no choice.

They are America's proxy along with Israel...in the Middle East.

What do we suppose...they are trying to PROTECT?

Sure isn't FEMINISM!!
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@Platoscave Those problems you named all exist in the workplace. "Equal rights" only refers to how you're treated by the government and the law. Although that's a rather narrow scope to look at, I suppose.
abe182 · 46-50, M
Man hater. Topless rights. Higher pay. Dike rights. Or freedom to pursue happiness without gender playing a role.

One of the above.
@abe182 i think you are on to something there..
it seems hardly is some group with a productive idea is hardly started but it gets taken over, by hostile person, seeking a scapegoat
Platoscave · F
@abe182 Gender only plays a "role" when the "game" is DESIGNED that way!!!
abe182 · 46-50, M
@Platoscave you can blame your problems on men it's your life
Feminist: One who believes in feminism

Feminism: The movement to achieve equal rights and opportunities for both men and women
@Qwerty14 thanks qwert. I think we have at least ONE baseline now.
DunDunDun · 22-25, F
It means what the meaning says it means. But sadly most people like changing the meaning of words to meaning whatever they want it to.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
A movement for equal oppurtunities and social emancipation of women.
Platoscave · F
To clear this up for once and 4 all:
Feminists are humanists first last and always.

"Man-hating" is usually in the mind of the one who who wants to smear legitimate feminism.

Yeah a lot of people hate other people and the opposite sex too.

But lets not confuse this stuff with this private anger from individual people who have trouble in their lives and always think someone else is to blame.

Hope this settles it.
DarkMoon · 22-25, M
The advancement of women's rights, in an attempt to achieve total equality for women.
(I don't think it means a belief in equality per se, because it has little to say about any area of life where women traditionally have advantages).
Platoscave · F
@DarkMoon I have heard too much of that stuff from GUYS.

Women don't need traditional advantages.

They need and deserve equal opportunities.

And EQUAL PAY!!!!
midnightsun · 26-30, M

@midnightsun AH! good point! I should change the word to feminism.
