They were: "They was" just sounds wrong.
They was: You use "was" for singular.

The "was" is used in first person singular (he, she, it).
The "were" is used in the second person singular and plural (you, your, yours) and first and third person plural (we, they)

Plus "They was" just sounds awful and people can judge you on your words.

I know it sounds mean but I agree with you..very southern. Vocabulary is so different in many places.@joesand99

They were. I don’t know, I guess it’s where I live. They was just sounds like they live in the back woods or something. Guess it’s just my English drilled into me or something.

@Keepitsimple Sure, because they is traditionally plural. However, if you use it as a singular pronoun, referring to an individual of indeterminate sex, shouldn't it take was, which is the singular verb tense?

It sounds so weird...just totally too southern for me I guess. Even if it is proper I couldn’t bring myself to say it.@DunningKruger

@DunningKruger That is the issue. They is not a "a singular pronoun, referring to an individual of indeterminate sex" It is just bad English and while I understand why some want to use that, I refuse to just speak bad English because someone wants to try to identify with something that is their wish and not based on anything else. I don't judge others and don't want them to judge me OR impose their beliefs on me by trying to make me use that bad English. If you are male you are male and if you are female you are female. I will call you whatever you want but using they is just silly to me.

I understand what you are saying but where I live we don’t say “they was”. First thing we would ask is where the person was from. It just sounds odd.

They were, not because the alternative sounds wrong, but because 'they' is an indefinite article, not a singular article, when used in that fashion.

I think "They were" is correct. The only time I heard "they was" used in a sentence was in the deep south 😂

Neither one. "They" is not singular.
