Does the president of the United States have to be a Christian?

JustKelly · 36-40, F
JFK was Roman Catholic and both Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Johnson did not identify with any religion. Every other president however has been Christian.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@ViciDraco no they don't believe in salvation through faith alone and worship saints
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Mountainlady16 Your branch of Christianity does not get to determine what a true Christian is. And they can find just as much biblical support for themselves being Christians as you can find for your own case. The smaller groups just throw that claim out of jealousy because Catholicism is the largest and most powerful Christian denomination in the world and they want to leech followers.

@JustKelly you know your history and what kind of work you do?
no and the US christian is in decline so within the next few years a non christian will be in office. well technically trump would be the first non christian.

It would be nice if your president was a human being and not a daft little orange troll.
MildlyInappropriate · 51-55, M
Obviously not an *actual* Christian, given the current POTUS.
Straylight · 31-35, F
Technically not, but in practice, yes.

Realistically yes. In my opinion any smart person doesn't believe in religion at face value. So none of the Presidents have ever been true Christians.

No, Obama is a Muslim.
Straylight · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco And drank alcohol, ate pork, and what else? Oh yeah, bombed Muslim countries. If he's a Muslim, he's not very good at it.

@ViciDraco One doesn't have to go to church to have faith, I was born Catholic but the only time I go to church is for a wedding or a funeral.

I didn't think that was a requirement.

Doesn't have to be. I'd be surprised if a non religious president is elected in the next twenty years though.
Straylight · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco I've been flying the Asatru banner for about a year now. More as a philosophy than a religion, but still.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Straylight I'll have to look into it. Not a religious person, but with such a nice virtue system it is at least worth recognizing.
Straylight · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco I'm not very religious myself, but i think it's important to have values to measure your actions against and stay on track. And being of Germanic decent, those are the values of my ancestors.
