For those who don't believe in the bible, the verses don't help. But if you study the historicity of Jesus as a person, you realise the evidence that he existed and that we have a substantial record of his words is pretty well established.

Jesus claimed to be God. He did this in many ways and on many occasions. There are only three options:
1. He was deluded. (He was wrong and didn't know it.)
2. He was telling a lie. (He was wrong and did know it.)
3. He was telling the truth. (He was right.)

Christ is one of the most respected and influential human beings in history. He inspired other people who inspire us like Gandhi, Martin Luther King and others. His words have inspired millions. He presented ideas that dignify the poor and vulnerable, promoted non-violent response to injustice and wrong. Taught love as profound action even for your enemies.

I find him the most inspiring and together human being I know of. The idea that he was lying or deluded doesn't add up for me. That only leaves one option...

[@519706,ArishMell] Christianity is a syncretic religion, derived from Judaism (obviously), Zoroastrianism, and pre-Christian European pagan religions, where we get the Christmas Tree, the Easter Bunny, and in Catholicism, the worship of Mary which was derived from matriarchal religions. Even the popular image of Satan as a horned man with hooves and a tail was adapted from pre-Christian deities.
ArishMell · 61-69, M
[@422444,Lila15] What a mixture!

I wonder where some of the more way-out OT tales come from; almost certainly from much older traditions but before recorded history, so the stories became slowly distorted with time into the forms captured by the Hebrew scribes.

Some of that absorption by Christianity suggests compromises by evangelists unable to make their new subjects give up old beliefs entirely.

Most, like the Easter bunny and Christams tree, are harmless, but it's so terrible though that the link between Mary and matriarchal religions becamse so warped over the centuries into mysogyny.

I'm not sure but I think the image of the devil having tail and horns appeared or at least became widespread, in early Mediaeval times.

There is one small town in Italy or Sicily that retains a curious funerary rite possibly from pre-Christian practices. After the conventional Christian funeral service the deceased is interred in a fairly shallow grave in the local, well-drained volcanic earth. The body is exhumed with due respect after a year, cleaned, anointed and if sufficiently mummified naturally, placed in a local ossuary. If not it is re-buried for another year. The Church does not entirely approve, but accepts it is a purely local tradition that has existed for longer than anyone knows.

I recall that from a TV documantary probably 30 or 40 years ago though I assume it still takes place. The start of the programme did warn that it "contains scenes some may find distressing". I am a bit squeamish but realised as I watched the mourners cleaning and re-dressing the dessicated, decomposed body that they were treating their dead with the same care and respect as their ancestors had been doing for centuries. In the event this one was ready for the ossuary and carried there in some triumph to join those gone before.

There is a slightly similar tradition in a part of Asia, Borneo I think.

The point though is although funerary rites are be very different from culture to culture, at heart making sense of and easing death and bereavement are among the few, primary drivers of almost all religions.

You realize that if Jesus and god are the same. It renders the whole crucifixion story pointless. He gets nailed to the cross, then goes back to heaven after a rough weekend no worse for ware. He didn’t sacrifice anything. Not even his only begotten son.
If he were in fact god, he could have simple said, ok, you got a clean slate , but behave yourselves or you’ll end up burning. You get one second chance, get it right this time.
Always thought that bit didn’t make any sense.

[@4018,ExperienceDLT] Anyone really studying the Bible will not think he was a crazy man, since he did the miracles and was raised the third day infront of 500 people willing to die testifying. And it could not have been a myth because of the fulfilled prophesies. The Bible was written before today. And today we see prophesies fulfilled. Like whats happened in Israel being gathered again just like God said in 1948. And over and over he said

There aren't any definite unambiguous prophecies in the bible. Just vague metaphors, some of which have been interpreted to fit actual events. Some Christians have claimed the birth of Jesus was accurately prophesized but even now, supposedly post facto, no one can say when that was.

We don't know but we can choose to believe him so.

Some of those umpteen quotes seem nearer the Unitarian than Trinitarian interpretation of the stories, and some faiths revere Jesus as a very able teacher but fully human not divine; but please note that I don't claim any one is any more "right" or "wrong" than any other.
[@422444,Lila15] Christian proselytizers invariably resort to insults in a last ditch attempt to "prove" their opponents wrong. 🤷‍♀️
