Is God real? [Spirituality & Religion]

Why or why not?
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

— Epicurus

If God exists he doesn't meet the definition.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@canusernamebemyusername If -- IF -- God is real, he is evil. Satan in disguise. So we should be thankful he is not real. I am.
Though we can't "observe" God, since He is in Heaven, we can observe a universe that yields evidence of one of two things: It's either God's handiwork, or it got here by accident, without a creator. The evidence has to point one way or the other. And scientific discoveries of this century clearly show that our universe is no accident, that there is an intelligent designer behind it all. So does history and archaeological studies.

St. Thomas Aquinas:
The Existence of God can be proved in five ways.
Argument Analysis of the Five Ways © 2016 Theodore Gracyk

The First Way: Argument from Motion

Our senses prove that some things are in motion.

Things move when potential motion becomes actual motion.

Only an actual motion can convert a potential motion into an actual motion.

Nothing can be at once in both actuality and potentiality in the same respect (i.e., if both actual and potential, it is actual in one respect and potential in another).

Therefore nothing can move itself.

Therefore each thing in motion is moved by something else.

The sequence of motion cannot extend ad infinitum.

Therefore it is necessary to arrive at a first mover, put in motion by no other; and this everyone understands to be God.

The Second Way: Argument from Efficient Causes

We perceive a series of efficient causes of things in the world.

Nothing exists prior to itself.

Therefore nothing [in the world of things we perceive] is the efficient cause of itself.

If a previous efficient cause does not exist, neither does the thing that results (the effect).

Therefore if the first thing in a series does not exist, nothing in the series exists.

If the series of efficient causes extends ad infinitum into the past, for then there would be no things existing now.

That is plainly false (i.e., there are things existing now that came about through efficient causes).

Therefore efficient causes do not extend ad infinitum into the past.

Therefore it is necessary to admit a first efficient cause, to which everyone gives the name of God.

The Third Way: Argument from Possibility and Necessity (Reductio argument)

We find in nature things that are possible to be and not to be, that come into being and go out of being i.e., contingent beings.

Assume that every being is a contingent being.

For each contingent being, there is a time it does not exist.

Therefore it is impossible for these always to exist.

Therefore there could have been a time when no things existed.

Therefore at that time there would have been nothing to bring the currently existing contingent beings into existence.

Therefore, nothing would be in existence now.

We have reached an absurd result from assuming that every being is a contingent being.

Therefore not every being is a contingent being.

Therefore some being exists of its own necessity, and does not receive its existence from another being, but rather causes them. This all men speak of as God.

The Fourth Way: Argument from Gradation of Being

There is a gradation to be found in things: some are better or worse than others.

Predications of degree require reference to the “uttermost” case (e.g., a thing is said to be hotter according as it more nearly resembles that which is hottest).

The maximum in any genus is the cause of all in that genus.

Therefore there must also be something which is to all beings the cause of their being, goodness, and every other perfection; and this we call God.

The Fifth Way: Argument from Design

We see that natural bodies work toward some goal, and do not do so by chance.

Most natural things lack knowledge.

But as an arrow reaches its target because it is directed by an archer, what lacks intelligence achieves goals by being directed by something intelligence.

Therefore some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to their end; and this being we call God.

I stole this off google for you. Saint Thomas Aquinas is a great saint to read about if you like philosophical stuff and truth.

Archie Bunker said it best, "Faith is believing in something that no one in their right mind would ever believe!". You either have it or not. If you have it, logic doesn't mean anything. And if you don't have it, logic dictates that it doesn't make much sense
@JohnRing Archie Bunker was quoting his script, but no matter who says what, that doesn't change God or His plans, and anyone can have salvation if they want it. Jesus turns no one away.

You can have your own opinion
He has saved me more times than I can count
Healed my kid that was crippled
gave my daughter 2 kids when doctors said she would never have 1
My daughter was hit broad side by a lady doing 60 ,she never touched her brakes ,she was accelerating to pass ,,totaled 2 cars
But my daughter has only minor injuries ,,she should be dead
I was healed instantly of drug addictions and alcoholism in 1994
I have had no desire to use since that night ,
I found my kids that had been hid from me for 12 years in June of 1995
November of 1995 ,I won full custody of them
The next few days I come home to find 12.ooo.oo in my mail box
I was washing cars disabled to support myself ,I finally won my SSDI case
I am not suppose to be able to walk but I do
So my relationship with Christ is very personal ,,He saved my life
I do not care how man know it alls say God is not real
I pray they never go through what I went to ,,to prove I was wrong
When I mocked His word ,,and said "If He is real I hate Him ,and I am quite sure He hates me back "",I was blaming the wrong guy
God was the one that kept saving me ,and keeping me from harming myself
But that is My testimony ,,,We each have to decide for ourselves
and soon ,we will all have to choose ,,,even those who won't ,will make a choice ,they chose the world
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@rckt148 I am glad things have worked out for you, but what you say is basically a crock of shit. You are in danger of being locked away if you keep that up.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@JonathanC like I said ,,you are entitled to your own opinion
it was a question ,,I gave my opinion ,,
and for your info this is how that locked away crap works

You have to be a danger to yourself or others
People who knew me before God changed me would agree
I was a lot more dangerous before ,,,now I can take BS like you just spouted and not get upset ,you only show your ignorance
Just in case you don't know what that means too
You just don't know ,,,the word ignorant is not a bad thing ,I was once ignorant too ,,,but now I see

have a good one
I would say Bless you
but from your unkind response ,I know it would be a waste of words
as was this ,,,at least I am no longer a Jerk who doesn't get we all are entitled to our own beliefs and opinions ,,how mature of you LOL
To me, yes, and it's not imaginary or whimsical. Unless talking to people you can't see is imaginary. Like on the phone. Or...here.
@JonathanC First, why don't you talk to ME, instead of 'Christians'?

Second, most Christians would not consider me one, and I understand why.

Third, although you will again label it 'false equivalency,' your attitude is like someone listening to others speak a foreign language and calling them stupid and delusional because you can't understand.

Fourth, I believe in God. We commune. Your disbelief has zero effect on that. I would never try to force my ideas on someone who doesn't agree.

Somebody asked, I answered. I don't recruit. Each has to find their own way, or not even look, as they choose.
JonathanC · 61-69, M
@Mamapolo2016 And I think you are delusional. And the more you rant, the more you seem so.
@JonathanC Rant? The old easy out. Let me help. "You are butt-hurt. You are brain-washed. You are unable to think for yourself. You are dangerously delusional. You are probably a flat-earther."

I am neither ranting or angry.

I hope you have a great night.
If you want to know if God is real, go to the source ... God’s Word. It will tell you everything you want and need to know, rather than listen to people who are guessing, do not know Him, and whose thinking is limited when it comes to spiritual things. God is not a liar. He is incapable of lying to you. He is sinless. I’ll send you my testimony on how I found Him. Everyone has a different experience, because we’re all different individuals. But never base salvation on feelings. Base it on God’s promises and you’ll never go wrong.

SheElf · 22-25, F
I'll say not real. Believers regularly misinterpret what goes on in their mind and all about them- always ignoring the better explanation. This makes it a sick fantasy.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@SheElf My daughter was crippled from age 8 - 12
Xrays ,MRI's ,bone tests ,and not only were her discs in bad shape so that she needed a body brace ,to protect her lungs should her spine actually break
she has a broken leg ,broken in 2 places and it would not mend ,
So for 4 yrs she was confined to a wheel chair ,,,but she crawled faithfully to an alter asking God to heal her ,,one day He did
When doctors seen her able to walk ,they took her right away for now MRI's
When the doctors brought her back to me they wanted me to consent to further testing ,and one was crying
They explained they are not allowed to use thgooe word "Miracle",so he would use the word impossible ,
The bones that were eaten up by disease were now as if she never has a disease
He said and I quote "She looks like she has grown a new spine ",,it is impossible
and her leg also looks like it was never broken ,,we may not be allowed to say it
but what else can I say ,,Its a miracle ,,
We thought maybe she was misdiagnosed ,so we pulled her records
with all the tests that have been done on her ,,there is no way she was misdiagnosed ,the MRI of today does not ever look like the same spine ,,
She is healed
We reported it to social security ,,stopped her disability checks
she went on to college and became a nurse
She was also told it would not be wise for her to try and have kids ,
they could trigger the disease again ,,,,she has 2 kids ,a son 18 and a daughter 17 ,,,and she does nursing ,raised 5 kids ,and takes care of a horse ranch
She will soon be 38 ,,,so you can think what you will
I could tell you about my own miracles but that one is enough
There is no mistaken this ,God healed my daughter ,the impossible became possible
And all the kings horses and all the kings men can assume they are so wise to say God is not real ,,to each their own opinion I say ,,but it only shows the IGNORANCE of mankind ,,,when so many of us have had similar experiences
But we have to be the fools ,,it goes against "Human" logic ,,the oh so wise
And thats the point ,,,no human could ever know the power of God
He made the universe and everything in it by design and even DNA has proven that
But humans in their arrogant wisdom ,spend a life time proving it just can't be
We are gods unto ourselves ,all power and energy just is
We who know can only pity you ,,,
As always with man ,they try to kill ,things they can't understand
No power on earth can rob this blessing or the many others I have seen
But then again I am not trying to "Debunk "God ,,though at one time I did ..
Now I praise and thank Him ,,for showing mercy and grace to such an IGNORANT piece of crap like me ,,,I am not worthy ,,but I am grateful
SheElf · 22-25, F
@rckt148 That's great, but of those we pray to be healed- almost all aren't. Miraculous recoveries are random at best. Yours is an example of what I meant about misinterpreting.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@SheElf You can be ignorant if you please ,mock things you dont understand
she did not just recover ,the bones show no sign she ever has a disease or a broken leg ,if you knew anything ,you would know healed breaks still show ,
There is no evidence she ever has a disease
She has been looked at by some of the best doctors in the country ,and they all say its impossible ,it looks like she grew a new spine ,it is if she never had a disease ,,I had to stop all the tests
there comes a time you just Praise God and stop allowing unbelievers to keep prodding for something they will never find ,,a Logical reason that fits their lack of belief ,,it has to be because of something man did ,,,,,
They admit its impossible ,and they are to ignorant to just accept it is what it is ,,,,she was rewarded for her faith ,,,
I myself have not had such a miracle ,but I do walk when they want to know how
I have has the same disease most of my life ,,and then I was given a vaccine that turned a heritage problem into a super disease that crippled me by age 29
I had to have part of my spine removed just to walk again ,but the disease keeps on eating ,,,and bone keeps crushing nerves ,and my spinal cord is now flattened in 2 places ,,my body is riddled with bone spurs ,joints bone to bone
and all I hear is are you sure you take no other medications ,supplements ?
From what we see on your MRI's you should not be able to walk ,let alone still have the range of motion of a 35 yr old ,,,,since I was told I would need surgery every 3 yrs for the rest of my life to walk ,and it would do me no good after age 45 ,,I would be in a wheel chair ,,so what ever it was I was pushing so hard to do ,,get it done ,I was running out of time ,
Well come March I will be 60 ,no other surgery ,and I am not in a chair and my pain is manageable ,,,,,,I shared this for believers not you
We don't need your approval ,or belief ,,,the fact is we do ,and nothing you can say can change that ,all you do is show how ignorant you are
you do not believe ,,,so it can't be true ,,,,,God does not heal others so why us
one day you can ask Him ,,,I can't answer that myself ,i can only testify as to things I know about ,,and I tell people when I do know something
I don't pretend like I do
I mocked God until age 34 myself ,,,until instantly He healed me from drug addiction and alcoholism ,,no withdraw ,no more desire to drink or use ,,that was over 24 yrs ago ,and yes doctors can help addicts ,,,but no one had ever come off major drugs without withdraw without divine help ,,,,NO ONE
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
There is no evidence that (the judeo-christian) "god" exists and no compelling reason to postulate one. Everything points to it being no more than a figment of some people's imagination at best.
SW-User
Don't know. Can't be proven or disproven. That's the trouble with entities that may exist on the metaphysical plane.
The testimony of the Scriptures is that the purpose of prophecy is to let us know that God exists and that He has a plan for this world. By the foretelling of persons, places, and events hundreds of years before their occurrence, the Bible demonstrates a knowledge of the future that is too specific to be labeled a good guess. By giving examples of fulfilled prophecy, the Scriptures give a strong testimony to their own inspiration. The Bible is literally “God-breathed”. (2 Timothy 3:16) The Greek word, “theopneustos”, means “God-breathed”, inspired by God. This is the only use of this word in the Bible to describe its inspiration of God.

An example of this would be the prophecy of King Cyrus (Isaiah 44:28; 45:1). The prophet Isaiah, writing about 700 b.c., predicts Cyrus by name as the king who will say to Jerusalem that it shall be built and that the temple foundation shall be laid.

At the time of Isaiah’s writing, the city of Jerusalem was fully built and the entire temple was standing. Not until more than 100 years later would the city and temple be destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 b.c. After Jerusalem was taken by the Babylonians, it was conquered by the Persians in about 539 b.c. Shortly after that, a Persian king named Cyrus gave the decree to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. This was around 160 years after the prophecy of Isaiah!

Further, Isaiah predicted that a man named Cyrus, who would not be born for about 100 years, would give the command to rebuild the temple, which was still standing in Isaiah’s day and would not be destroyed for more than 100 years. This prophecy is truly amazing, but it is not isolated.

There are, in fact, literally hundreds of prophecies which predict future events. The idea that the fulfillment of the predictions is a result of coincidence or chance is absurd, in light of the evidence. God has given sufficient evidence of His existence and of the divine inspiration of the Scriptures by means of fulfilled prophecy.

@SW-User
Things work just the opposite in the spiritual world. Man says to God, “Show me…and THEN I’ll believe!” God says, “Believe! And THEN I’ll show you.”

Can you predict the future with 100% accuracy? Hardly. Yet God can. He DID and He DOES, in His Holy Word.

God tells us in His Word, what happened in the past, what is happening today, and what we can expect in the future, with perfect, precise accuracy.

Answer :

If you believe in your heart God exist they exist. No matter the name you call (God, Allah, great Spirit, Universe, higher power).

If you do not believe God exist then to you God does not exist.

Answering a question and respectful debate is not preaching one way or the other. You are not going to change anyone be lief by insulting them especially calling them "uneducated". The person whom everyone hold up as the definition of smart smart, was a believer. We famously stated "God does not play craps" in an old and very interesti g article that i read a reprint of when i was much much younger.

Of topic but many think it is :
Preaching and working to convert to a way of thought is not belief in God, It is belief in Religion. God and religion are different things. Many egregious thing have been done by RELIGION in the name of God / Allah. That is a true shame

@Moonii Some think I share my stories to shove religion down their throats ,
I rarely speak of God here unless the subject is brought up ,
Once in a while I feel lead to share a few of my experiences not for the one I am responding to ,,but for someone that may read that persons post ,,
I do not post looking for converts ,,,I speak up to encourage others to share their testimony too ,some one that might be afraid to otherwise ,,

I already know that I know God /Christ is real ,,He has proven His existence to

But I share for the believer ,,who has been beaten up and is doubting their faith
My way of encouraging the believer ,,,He is real
not only did he heal my kid ,,He instantly healed me from drug addictions and alcoholism
I heard someone say today doctors can help with that too
But not without withdraw ,,do it instantly ,,and you never have the desire to use again ,,,its not in remission ,,its gone 24 yrs clean Jan 18th ,,
The lost can assume what they want ,,even God won't force them to believe
He gave them a lamb for a perfect sacrifice and did not spare him ,,it was His son ,,He wiped away their sin ,,now its up to them if they want the mercy
We will all be judged by the law one day ,,,I am not that perfect ,,Christ is
He said if I believed in Him ,,not only would He see I had all I need ,He would show me things the so called "wise " would love to see ..
and not to worry about my shortcomings ,,,He already paid for my sins
When He willfully let them hang Him on that tree
I am grateful for all He has done for me ,,now I share the story
Not for me or my family ,,I am already born again ,,,I share it for the luke warm
He is real ,,He does love you ,,now get back on fire ,,don't make Him have say He never knew you
And sadly , not all who say they know Him do ,,His keep the faith in Christ ,and His commandments ,,that is how we show we love Him
He shows us He loves us in so many ways that the world is just to "Logical " to see,,,its a shame ,,they are the ones that have been brainwashed
once upon a time ,,Everyone knew God was real ,,satan is good at his job
Have a blessed one ,,I am sure you will
