Americans: how long do you think the shut-down will last and how will it end?

I'm not asking what you want to happen but what you think will happen. To me, it seems that it could go on a long time because both sides are committed to a position. I guess it's a binary choice: you build a wall or you don't.
Ynotisay · M
I have a feeling it'll end by this time next week. And that's because GOP lawmakers understand that the "wall" has been, and will be, nothing but a bullshit talking point intended to convince stupid, fearful people that they need protection. The ramifications of what's really going on right now can't be ignored. I mean, a story just came out about the FDA not being able to do food inspections. That's real life stuff. And since they see Trump is a sinking ship the rats will protect themselves.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Ynotisay Do you think that there is a way of Republicans to back out of this without losing face? This seems like an issue that the Trump base still really cares about.
Ynotisay · M
@Burnley123 I do think they can back out of it and I think they have to. McConnell knows he doesn't have a united party on this one. If they go all in with a vote they really own it. I don't see that happening. Not with what's getting ready to come down from Mueller and the NY court. The writing is on the wall (pardon the pun).

We all know that the entire "wall" nonsense was nothing but a catch phrase put together for Trump by his campaign staff, admittedly, so he'd continue to talk about immigration during the campaign. So the GOP knows a wall was never going to happen. They also know that they're new found "humanitarian" perspective isn't going to fly. With anyone. Particularly the 'base.'

So I see it as the timing being right for those with political aspirations down the road to make their move in defense of the American people. The smart, ambitious ones will. Some will go down with the ship. But there only needs to be a few so...yeah. I think the end of this is pretty close.

I think it will get a lot worse, Trump doesn't seem like he's budging. In all honesty it's like someone said here, he's actually got all these options for protecting our border but he specifically wants a wall to please his base and only his base.

It's really stupid in all honesty but I think this is going to last awhile and things will get to the point that the Army and others in higher power will start to find out they won't be getting paid from the shut down and either cave or finally impeach Trump. I don't think a GOVT shutdown should be legal because we kind of need the Govt to run things and if they don't want to run things then maybe we should start finding people who will.

@AgapeLove Yeah I'm hyperbolic sometimes only when specifically writing because I find it expresses what I feel more about the situation than not.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@SatanBurger I agree. And now the real reason for Trumps attention seeking becomes apparent. Cohen, his long time Lawyer and fix it man has agreed to testify before Congress.
This is likely to be rather a bare knuckle session compared to to the politically correct effort Mueller would have had to observe to stay out of the minefield.
I can imagine Trump already painting "Fake News" signs. Of course The question that hasnt been asked yet is why such a business genius like Trump would hire and keep such a lying scumbag as Cohen so close for so long.
I think we all know the answer and its going to be fun to watch.
And this in not the main event. This isnt even the curtain raiser.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
We're in uncharted territory because we have a president who doesn't give a damn how much damage is done to our economy dues to his stuborness and because there are too many Trumpets in the U.S. Senate who can prevent a veto override if a bill gets passed that Trump doesn't like.

So, yes, this could go on for weeks.

My guess is that the airline industry will start feeling the pinch first because TSA workers are among the lowest paid government workers right now who are NOT getting paid - and therefore likely will be the ones more likely to quit. Can the TSA hire replacement scabs? But even a scab wants to get paid and the TSA coudln't pay them either. So the result will be longer and longer lines. And security concerns will rise.

Of course, it really could all be a mute point.

If border wall funding is passed but Democrats win the White House in 2020, it will get scrapped in 2021.

@silmarilion456 Some globalist, lining her pockets. Makes one wonder where all that money they have came from, seeing as how they claimed to be broke when they left the White House and had to steal furniture.

Trump's wall is not going to be built.

@Northwest And your solution to the problem of illegal immigration is....

@sunsporter1649 Better than yours.

Trump is going to have to find a way to back down from this. He's painted himself into a corner and he needs to save face. If he's as transparent as he's been in the past, he'll create a relief package, pat himself on the back and tell America he solved the shutdown issue. This sounds flippant, but it's quite possible it's what he'd do.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Graylight I am a racist. I watch all the races I can on television, especially NASCAR.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@sunsporter1649 That might be funny, except I know you're still a NASCAR fan, which tells me much of what I need to know.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Graylight Especially Daniel Suarez, driver of the #41 Haas Automation/ARRIS Ford.
I think Trump has already started backpedaling and will accept more money without a wall and call it a win, once the Republicans squirm enough. It's just ploy for him, and he's either going to self destruct or try to survive and fight through the next two years. I actually hope it's the latter, because if he self destructs, I think it could be worse.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
At least another 2 weeks.

Trump will get his wall but it will be called something like "enhanced individual repelling system" and there will be noted compromises.

Both sides will claim the other caved.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@SumKindaMunster Entirely possible.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@SumKindaMunster I could see it happening.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Seems to me that if you want the government open build the wall.
@sunsporter1649

I don't think all the people not earning a paycheck would agree so cavalierly lol
🎶Empathy, empathy! Put yourself in the place of me!🎵

Know what i mean?

@Pikachu You would think Miss Nancy would have some, would you not?
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Pikachu Empathy? Asks the guy who spends all his time on here baiting Trump supporters with loaded questions and smug insults.

Thats not strictly true.. Although it is factual. Trump linked the Wall with a housekeeping funding bill. It was that action that brought this on and Trump admitted as much by stating up front this was his shut down. (A position he has now changed.)But he has the power to uncouple those funding bills and undo this whole thing. But equally. he WANTS this in the headlines to keep other things out. So he doesnt give a damn how long it goes on. And the Democrats are pretty well nailed to a cross on their position. They cant be seen to let Trump have a real win on this.

I don't know how long it will last. It might last until Trump realizes that he's losing a lot of support from his GOP as the shutdown continues.

When the Trump tantrum ends, and not a second sooner. If he doesn't back down he's guaranteed to never get a second term.
PrivatePeeks · 26-30, F
@WindOfAdolf If the shutdown is still in effect come reelection time nobody will want him.

@PrivatePeeks The GOP will save his ass. They'll throw in a big incentive to Chuck and Nancy;
Americans don’t really care about the shutdown. It’s not affecting most people’s daily lives. It’ll be a long one, at least a few months..

Could be a while. Both sides seem quite content to keep drinking turpentine and pissing on the brush fire.
