Do you think Barack Obama would have been elected President if he had been a *WASP?

[c=#000000]* White Anglo Saxon Protestant[/c]
hunkalove · 61-69, M Best Comment
He was elected because of 8 years of bad leadership from dubya and loser opponents like McCain and Romney. Had nothing to do with his race.
Imsleepy · 31-35
@hunkalove It having nothing to do with his race is just a false statement. It wasn’t the only factor, but it definitely contributed.
@Imsleepy No, Obama won in spite of it, that’s why it continued to be an issue once he did win—including with the current president and his racist “birthers”.

^^ This ^^

Probably not, with the same experience, and voting history, and mysterious past. For a lot of people Barack Obama was an 'olive branch' or a 'posturing' vote.

"Hey look at me! I voted for a kind of non white guy! I'm socially enlightened!"

He got the radical left vote, the black vote, and the white guilt vote in a large number of cases. Others were voting their conscience and sincerely felt the "hope and change" thing.

@puck61 What good has he done. And be prepared - if you mention the economy, I'm going to counter it with the analysis of the full economic situation of the US.
@Graylight Things improved quickly when Trump took office. The market skyrocketed when Trump took office. Veterans affairs began to improve quickly when Trump took office. Rules of engagement quickly changed when Trump took office. Deregulation, increased energy production, autonomy was taken more seriously. etc etc, from my perspective, Trump is a much better president than Obama was.
It doesn't matter. The establishment is left, so "documented facts" has become an oxymoron.

You and I are like Rudyard Kipling's "Ballad of East and West", excluding all the detail , of course. We simply are never going to see eye to eye on this, but I am not a NAZI, and I doubt you are ANTIFA. You don't like my politics, and I don't like yours, BUT..... I don't think either one of us is as emotionally invested in the whole mess, as the other assumes. I love art. I love Ray Bradbury, and Robert A Heinlein, Bill Watterson, and Greg Larson, I love plants, and I will carry a spider out of the house rather than kill it. I cuddle with, and talk embarrassing baby talk with my dog. I write poetry, and I'm not half bad, if I 'do' say so myself. I write songs and sing and play guitar. I have gay and transgender friends that I am not the least bit embarrassed to be seen with. I use to do a bit of theater in Tucson Az. I was a professional tramp for years, and busked on Venice Beach and Santa Monica sidewalks and boardwalks. I cry during genuinely sad movies. As much as I rant and rave and pontificate, my politics don't define me, and I doubt very seriously if your politics define you.
Hi. I'm Robert. Pleased to meet you. You win! I almost wish I could change the way I see things just so we could just talk about something else! You 'do' win though. This is me waving the white flag! I hope I get the re-education camp instead of the firing squad! 🤕
@puck61 Oh my gawd! I found bad grammar in this! I have to edit!

Let's be real, a black man named "Barack Hussein Obama"...beat John McCain and Mitt Romney in national elections. If he could run a third time and did it, he'd probably still be president.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Xuan12 Very true.
Theliberal · 36-40, M
@Xuan12 probably, seems you people like a president thats soft on the ears and doesnt do shit for America except run us in debt.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
@Theliberal seems to me? Seems to everyone. We keep electing such men.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
I don't think Barack Obama would have been elected if he had been properly vetted.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 This is false. Shall we start with Obama respects people. Oh we do not wanna talk about class now do we.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 More indoctrination from a low vibration entity.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Zonuss Obama is a clinical narcissist, He respects no one.
Shaneishere · 31-35, M
Obama is a narcissistic Sociopath. That is a very dangerous condition. They have no respect for anyone unless they are helping them along the path to their greatness, whatever they decide that is.
I'm not sure. It was timely, for certain, and I think many Americans felt that deeply. While I disagreed with many of his policies, there's no denying he was eloquent and presentable.

The U.S. is currently unsure about whether we continue to be us or become Europeans.

I think his election was a sign that, contrary to popular belief, the U.S. is ready to include all, without surrendering who we are. This is a quality other English speaking nations who share our ancestry have not yet displayed.
Peapod · 61-69, F
Absolutely. He was the right combination of intelligence, personality, and ability to articulate to large masses of people. He proved he was a great choice, regardless of ethnicity.
Fernie · F
@Peapod Obama would have easily had a third term...and it chaps "their" asses
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Fernie, I would have happily given the man a third term. He was everything I expect in a sitting president.
Fernie · F
@Peapod Same here!
Jibby · 56-60, C
Seems how Hillary had a grand wizard for a hero I don't see why not
@Jibby "Mentor"
Graylight · 51-55, F
By far, that has been the defining characteristic of our presidents.
Lostpoet · M
No. He rode on the idea of change, but the new sound sounded very much like the old sound.
Wasn’t it another example of Hillary or someone else...?
That's a pretty complicated question, and I'm inclined to think his race had something to do with driving him to get where he was, but the guy was a dynamite speaker and had the right message at the right time.

If he'd been white, he might well not have gotten the nomination, but after W, and given the opposition, I don't think being black was as much of a positive factor in the general election. Hopey Changy was the winning message, just like Make America Great Again was the right message in 2016.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
probably, he looks good on tv, he's a great speaker, and he didn't rely on "alternate facts" for support
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
Nope. He was the affirmative action president, no doubts.
Considering the circumstances and what the U.S. had been facing when he ran, a WASP offering the same messages of hope and change would certainly have been elected, with less fanfare and self-congratulation by the country.

Moreover, when the GOP said they were "willing to work with" him, they'd have meant it.
