What is the longest you have gone without talking to a sibling ?

It’s been 7 years since my dad kicked my older brother Josh out of the house for using heroin. It being Christmas n all..I think I would like to reach out .. but yeah .. that’s that
This is a totally personal decision, and one best not made in the throes of Christmas nostalgia. My recommendation to you would be to go to a local Al-anon meeting or call their hotline. (That's the group established for people who love an addict.) There you can learn what you might expect if you find him, and how to prepare yourself. And how to contact a group near you. They can help you understand what enabling is and how to stop yourself from doing it, if you find him.

Truth is - every human is different but in many ways, every addict is the same. There are glimpses of the person (or maybe just the drug's impersonation of the person) but by and large you are talking to the addiction.

People tend to forget about siblings and their pain and loss.
And there is also your well-being to consider. Suppose you don't reach out and three Christmases from now learn it's too late?

Tough row to hoe, Alexasmile. I did not have this particular problem but estrangement from several family members for a couple of years. I re-connected for my mother's sake (and I suppose they accepted reconciliation for the same reason) and now both of them, and my mother, are gone. I will forever be glad I dodged that guilt bullet. In my circumstance, it stopped mattering who was right.

Very sad to hear. Is he still using?

Yea I’m 18 now and living with my boyfriend .. I want to know how my big bro is doing@LyricalOne

@SW-User Go for it!

@SW-User I live just outside Phoenix, if you trust me enough. I could check the phone books out here, or you could too
1 year. My brother treated me badly when I visited him once. I live overseas and hadn’t seen him in over a year. He was so rude to me. Yelled at me for eating something without a plate, walking on his carpet with flip flops even I was chasing my baby around everywhere trying to keep him from the basement stairs. When I left I told my mother I was never going back.
He did say sorry a year later, but only because my mother told him to make things right or he would never see me again.
SW-User
Damn a forced apology huh .. do u still talk ? @MissMollyCharlotte0702
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
sorry to hear about your brother, I hope he got out of it, I know a few people that quit heroin by following a methadone program and never looked back, one of them just finished a bachelor degree in finance, got married and is expecting a child. there is always hope. I personally have not spoken to my sister in over 25 years but for very different reasons.
SW-User
Damn seeing the number of people on here having similar situations with their siblings I kind felt I was the only one .. @reflectingmonkey
Allelse · 36-40, M
Oh years!! I try and reach out to the insane cunt every now and then, because its my stupid sympathetic nature, even though she's poison but never leads to anything.
SW-User
Is it just in our nature that siblings do not get along??@Allelse
Allelse · 36-40, M
@SW-User It seems that way. My father and his brother hate each other, and the only siblings I know who do get on, only get on because they had an evil parent, or evil parents and so HAD to band together to survive. Like in the matter of my mother and her siblings, and even they still fight sometimes.

SW-User
Can I ask why .. just cause? @SW-User
SW-User
She decided to leave home
My little sister is the only one I don't talk to on a regular basis. The longest I've gone without speaking to her is one year.
SW-User
Is it just cause ? Or something someone did @DreamyCrush
@SW-User Some he-said/she-said sh*t my mother started. She told my little sister that I said something about her when I was talking about my older sister, so instead of asking me about it, my younger sister just decided to stop talking to me. One time we arrived at the same place to see our men [her husband was my boyfriend's brother] and she just walked right past me like she did not see me.

I've gone a year without seeing or talking to my bro. I think yesterday was another start to another few years.
SW-User
Just sibling differences ? @XReaganX
XReaganX · 26-30, F
@SW-User HUGE. We have different values.
SW-User
Oh
Tonydang · M
2 years and for the same reason my son using heroin there’s not a day that I don’t think about him
SW-User
I know my dad gets drunk sometimes and cries .. It scares me and I don’t know if I should comfort him or just stay away.. I know my dad thinks about my brother .. he used to tell me about how josh was good in this or everything else .. and then it stopped @Tonydang
@SW-User Hugs to you. I wouldn't know what to do in that situation either but maybe when he is in a better mood, you could suggest that he reach out to him or see how he would react to you contacting your brother.
SW-User
I have never met 3 of my siblings. The one I was raised with.... it's been several years since we've talked.
SW-User
Why ? @SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User Because I just met my biological father about 6 years ago. He has 4 other kids.... I'm the oldest. Only one was interested in meeting me. The other ones were ticked to find out about me.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
Only a few months....I have 7 siblings and talk to them all, but my brother is in another State and sometimes i don’t talk to him for a while.
SW-User
I think it normal to not talk to a sibling for a while .. you have kids .. lives .. jobs .. husbands lol @DragonFruit
curiosi · 61-69, F
20 years, 30? We can't stand each other.
curiosi · 61-69, F
@SW-User My mother pitted us against each other all through childhood. It's sad.
SW-User
Have u ever thought about making amends? @curiosi
curiosi · 61-69, F
@SW-User No can do. He's too emotionally damaged. He worships his mommy she is his god.
MisterGrey · 41-45, M
You should yes, he's still a part of your family and your life. I'd still want to keep in touch if it was my son.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
1 year, brother and now dad
SW-User
And now your dad?? Why ??@ronisme1
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
They both are so negative and greedy. My brother is 59 years old and has never moved out of my parents house. They both have the most closed minds of anyone I have ever met. Hatred towards everyone they meet and hatred towards my kids and grandkids and I've had enough. Oh , and they are both very racists. I married a Latina so they openly talk about her like she is not even there. Talk about how terrible it is to have Mexicans in the USA. She is supposed to sit there and take that? She does but I dont. Oh well. We all have our problems. They drove my older brother out 15 years ago when he married a samoan girl. They did the same to her
SW-User
Wow .. that’s effed up !! Didn’t know this went on in a family unit .. but thanks for sharing @ronisme1
Gusman · 61-69, M
About 24 years now. Know not where he is.
SW-User
Ever wondered where he is and how he’s doing ?@Gusman
Gusman · 61-69, M
@SW-User Sometimes I think about him. It used to be really easy to find anyone in Australia. All one needed to do was look them up on the Electoral Roll. For some reason they made the roll secret so there is no way to find anyone.
SW-User
SW-User
That sucks .. are u guys close? @SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User they've since passed away, but we had started talking again
SW-User
That’s always good !! : ) @SW-User

Over 20 years and counting.
SW-User
Wow.. that’s along time .. do u ever think about them @SW-User
Elegy · 46-50
It's been about 28 years.
SW-User
Good lord !! Why @Elegy
Elegy · 46-50
@SW-User She's a horrible person that made the destruction of our family significantly worse than it had to be.

Addicts come in all shapes and sizes. You haven't been specific about how bad he got. If he was a pretty big addict with a kicker of self destruction or self loathing he's probably going to be someone you want to stay away from until he's hit his rock bottom and is ready to make amends. If on the other hand he was never a bad guy and your father just stigmatized him, maybe for your protection, then I don't see the harm in checking in on him.

Just some personal advice.
SW-User
Do you know where he is at?
SW-User
Phx Arizona @SW-User
Not long at all
SW-User
Good for you!!@BeefySenpie
