What’s a cover of a song that’s better than the original?

Personally I think Nirvana’s version of The Man Who Sold the World is better than Bowie’s.

Johnny Cash's version of hurt
Myselfatlast · 22-25, M
I think his age really brings out the message in the song [@8731,MilitantIrishman]

[@8731,MilitantIrishman] Yess I definitely agree
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
Jimi Hendrix did "All Along the Watchtower" better than Bob Dylan

KMFDM did "Straight to Video" better than Mindless Self Indulgence

A-TRAX did "Heads Will Roll" better than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Social Distortion did "Ring of Fire" better than Johnny Cash

[@6579,BlueMetalChick] Is that the drawing you posted on here before? If so, it's really good.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
[@8731,MilitantIrishman] Yep, it sure is.

Have I ever shown you my entire wall?
MilitantIrishman · 26-30, M
[@6579,BlueMetalChick] I don't think so but I'd love to see it
uncalled4 · 51-55, M
That whole show was lightning in a bottle. Ominous and dark and reflected Kurt's mindset. If only we knew what was coming...
konodioda · 18-21, F
[@329500,uncalled4] honestly :(
uncalled4 · 51-55, M
[@368781,konodioda] I heard little things that led up to it, like some drug issues....THAT was what I thought might take him out. :(
Pfuzylogic · M
I might disagree on that particular song but with “Hurt” I like Johnny Cash more than the NiN original.
Also I like this version of a KISS original by the Replacements.

[@3118,Pfuzylogic] Loved this. Reminds me of Joe Cocker.

Replacements were very much an 80s band known for their covers but they put out two huge albums, “Tim” and “Let it be”.
FreeSpirit1 · 46-50, F
Much better than Dylan in my opinion

[@5946,nedkelly] I disagree. I liked the original way better BUT, They did do their best work in that time Rick Springfield was with them//

The Eva Cassidy version of Sting's Fields of Gold.

Trying to remember his name...David something, you would know. The updated "Sound of Silence" a masterpiece.

This version of L’il Wayne’s Lollipop is better.

Running Up that Hill by Placebo is better than Kate Bush.
Grateful4you · 61-69, M
Disturbed. "Sound of silence"
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
Oh, I don't know who originally sang "Whiskey in the Jar" but I think the Grateful Dead did the best version of it.
Pfuzylogic · M
[@6579,BlueMetalChick]
It was originally an Irish Ballad before Thin Lizzy did the original rock version.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
[@6579,BlueMetalChick] the lyrics also go a bit different depending on region, but the story is the same. My favourite version is the Thin Lizzy version.
[@6579,BlueMetalChick] I loved Peter, Paul and Mary's 60s rendition of it.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGP-67nm-ZE]
I like Juice Newton's rendition of "Angel Of The Morning" better that the original, done by Merrilee Rush. But it was close.

You decide.

Johnny Cash "Hurt"
Willie Nelson "Scientist"
Kate Nash "Fluorescent Adolescent"
SarahAndSamantha · 46-50, F
Cyndi Lauper's version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, much better than the original by....I forget his name.

Also, metal blasphemy, I know, but I prefer this version of Dead Skin Mask to Slayer's. It's just creepier sounding and if you're doing a song about Ed Gein, it should be creepy

I love Queen, but the Metallica cover of Stone Cold Crazy is better:

I didn’t know it at the time but Ian’s voice is almost impossible to replicate.
TheFragile · 41-45, F
[@3118,Pfuzylogic] yes it's very unique
Pfuzylogic · M
[@326696,TheFragile]
I think the best voices to try have been David Gahan and Iggy Pop but even those rich voices don’t match his voice. Having said that NiN did a beautiful work there!
whowasthatmaskedman · 61-69, M
This version is better than the Johnny Cash original

I think Deschanel's "Sugar Town" was amazing!
AntisocialTroll · 51-55, F
I have a couple I prefer to the originals.

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAV4Rf2yiIE]
[@1078962,AntisocialTroll] 1- Great cover and a great tribute but I don't think anyone compares to dolores o'riordan. It also had a very specific relevance to the time and place.

2-Love Skald and I find this cover kind of hilarious. lol
AntisocialTroll · 51-55, F
[@346344,PicturesOfABetterTomorrow] I love both the original Zombie and this one pretty equally. As for Skald, I'd never even bother to listen to the original as this version is soooo good.
[@1078962,AntisocialTroll] Definitely.

And I was never really a huge White Stripes fan.
Gangstress · 36-40, F
Cherry Ghost did this originally in 200 - but Birdy covered it in 2011

And blew me away
