I love 70's and 80's Sci-Fi movies

The Thing. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Blade Runner, Logan's Run...All amazing stories by amazing directors.

Not to mention the music writers are phenomenal. Without them you really wouldn't have much of a movie.

@CanarysCry: Yes - a true friendship classic
twofacetoo · 26-30, M
Same here, but damn why did they have to be so depressing? 'Silent Running' is one of the best examples, a stellar movie with one of the most tear-jerking endings
At the very end, with the heroes dead, all that's left is one little robot to take care of all the plants by himself, with his dented little watering-can, as the last greenhouse floats through space to an unknown destination. What makes it so much worse / better is the Joan Baez number that never fails to make my lip tremble and my eyes go misty

@twofacetoo: I think the era lended itself to darker, depressing sci fi films. Back then it was harder for the studios to embrace some of the topics without cloaking the storyline in a science fiction world.

@twofacetoo: I would like to hear more of your opinions.

@PixieCutLover: The beauty of Logan's Run is the stark difference between the bubble world and the outside world. Both were very real to those who inhabited them. However, it wasn't until Logan returned to save the others that he truly realizes that he had been living in a golden cage filled with beautiful little birds.

@PixieCutLover: When you first see the bubble city you are given the impression of perfection. (It is not an accident the director chose an abandoned mall to film in) Everyone is beautiful and healthy. Sex is encouraged. Food and drink is plentiful. No one fears death because they believe they will be reborn at twenty one. Life is simple and easy. Then you are introduced to Logan who is a Sandman. His job is to eliminate anyone who attempts to run from the rebirth ceremony. He is arrogant, cocky and enjoys the perks of his job.
**Bit of interesting info:
The Sandman is a Dutch folklore spirit who sprinkles dust into the eyes of sleeping children. If they are good children they will have happy dreams. But if they are bad children they will have dark empty dreams.

@CanarysCry: I've been meaning to re-watch enemy - and Starfighter was great fun...I always think of it when going through a yellow light!
CanarysCry · 46-50, F
Fun little fact: The bald alien woman in The Last Starfighter was the directors wife.

@CanarysCry: Cool!

Silent Running is yet another classic of this era that stands the test of time.

I agree wholeheartedly with your cited choices.

The original Planet of the Apes, The Omega Man, and if I may dare to tread famous waters,Star Wars, a triumph of 70s cinema.
CanarysCry · 46-50, F
@WellFrog: You may always discuss the original Star Wars trilogy on any of my posts. Lol.
WellFrog · 56-60, M
@CanarysCry: I will refrain from discussion of said film in all of your posts, welcome though the challenge may be to find a connection to each.

Sometimes it is hard for people to see beyond the phenomenon and appreciate the pure story craft that is pervasive in what would become A New Hope. Not to mention production values exceedingly in advance of the film's relatively tiny budget.

I am pleased that you, too, have a fondness.
FurryFace · 61-69, M
blade runner meh , body snatches never saw , Logans run was good and Soilent Green
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@CanarysCry: yeah but he was Evil
CanarysCry · 46-50, F
@FurryFace: Well that is questionable. Was he evil or prone to becoming psychotic as the government wanted you to believe? Or was he a slave, with implanted memories, who wanted the option to live a free man? What would you do to be free and no longer fear being hunted down and killed?
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@CanarysCry: actually the evil guy was the Genius that invented them with only a limited life span of what 6 months , kind of sucks
crystalkid · 56-60, T
A few others of varying quality, but I still found enjoyable to watch....Westworld, Omega Man, A Boy and His Dog, Damnation Alley (more of so bad, it's good? Type),
CanarysCry · 46-50, F
@crystalkid: Yes West World was another great. A Boy and His Dog I have not seen. However "My Life as a Dog" was a beautiful film. Not technically sci-fi but a a coming of age story based around sci- fi.
Noble · 56-60, M
I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, because t those were always great. The original, Thing has always been one of my faves. These also made me think of The Blob too.
