Same here, but damn why did they have to be so depressing? 'Silent Running' is one of the best examples, a stellar movie with one of the most tear-jerking endings
[SPOILER WARNING]
At the very end, with the heroes dead, all that's left is one little robot to take care of all the plants by himself, with his dented little watering-can, as the last greenhouse floats through space to an unknown destination. What makes it so much worse / better is the Joan Baez number that never fails to make my lip tremble and my eyes go misty

@twofacetoo: Oh wow...I have never seen that one. I will have to look for it. Honestly, Joan Baez could bring a rock to tears.

@twofacetoo: I also remember Silent Running - I thought I'd share this vid which I always thought inspired by the movie - for some reason ($) it's not on youtube....

@twofacetoo: I was always a little let down by the ending of Logan's Run. I mean what happens now? Who is going to feed all these young people? Where will they live? How will they protect themselves from disease? So many questions. In my opinion they could have wrapped it up nicely with an ending similar to Zardoz.

@CanarysCry: Yeah that's always been a depressing thing to consider. That old man can't live forever, and it's doubtful he himself actually KNOWS how to survive. He knows some things, sure, but how is a society going to be rebuilt with one mad old man and a bunch of young people who have the minds of children?
'Logan's Run' has a great ending but it's pretty miserable when you take logic into it
Also, to your earlier comment, 'Silent Running' is basically 'Wall-E' for grown-ups, in that it's got little dialogue, lots of quiet moments, and its just about the relationships of the human and his robot assistants, as they strive to protect a space-based greenhouse in the far future, when there are no more plants on Earth

@twofacetoo: I think the era lended itself to darker, depressing sci fi films. Back then it was harder for the studios to embrace some of the topics without cloaking the storyline in a science fiction world.
