How come space ships in sci fi always seem to have an underwhelming amount of firepower?

Like...most of these ships should be able to level cities due to their size...yet they don't...they provide "some" orbital support at best...

And why do they need wings or b round ya never see a space cube

@freebird: Yh but those guys go for ultimate efficiency...ergo cubes
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
The wings are a bit non-sense, unless the ship travels in atmosphere too. Round probably has something to do with gravity. Large objects in space naturally become round. I guess if you're building a large space object, that's just the easiest design to start with, since it tends toward that shape anyway.

@Xuan12: Or if the wings act as sensor pods...if you know what I mean.

Large objects aren't necessarily weaponized.

@Xuan12: I think they used a Nuke in their first engagement with the Covenant in space...when that didn't work the infiltrators they sent to deal with the ship from the inside were given nuclear warheads

But in the games the only game that had a nuke in it at all was Halo 4 in the last mission.

@Fangirlsarah1996: Oh, the things I was thinking of were a Covenant bomb and a broken slip drive or some such. Similar effect to a nuke though.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
@Xuan12: Odd The Covenant didn't employ those highly effective tactics in other situations...

The fiction element requires that a battle be even-sided in order to extend the narrative. If an alien force could end us in a millisecond, it wouldn't be much of a tale. Although I'd be quite happy to see Jeff Goldblum blindsided by a non-Hollywood exoform.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
I'm not saying it wouldn't be one sided...I'm talking both sides having ships armed to the teeth with weapons...like the mentality of The Man O' War...they put cannons wherever they could fit them.

Though a lot of ships in Sci Fi tend to only have a handful of weapons (Stat Wars Imperial Class SDs having around 10-12 cannons with an unknown number of smaller guns, The USS Enterprise only usually having a handful of phasers and 1-2 torpedo launchers and Halo UNSC frigates only having 12 cannons and one main gun)

A lot of these ships realistically would be able to do a lot more than shown in their respective medias...though they don't
LMAO shhhhhh the plot

People level some technology with other technologies. We don't have ships like that, and in the modern combat centered mindset, the next thing we think to improve are the "guns"

The atmosphere?
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
What about it?

@Fangirlsarah1996: a lot of devastating weapons work better in a vacuum.
