How come space ships in sci fi always seem to have an underwhelming amount of firepower?

Like...most of these ships should be able to level cities due to their size...yet they don't...they provide "some" orbital support at best...

The fiction element requires that a battle be even-sided in order to extend the narrative. If an alien force could end us in a millisecond, it wouldn't be much of a tale. Although I'd be quite happy to see Jeff Goldblum blindsided by a non-Hollywood exoform.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be one sided...I'm talking both sides having ships armed to the teeth with weapons...like the mentality of The Man O' War...they put cannons wherever they could fit them.

Though a lot of ships in Sci Fi tend to only have a handful of weapons (Stat Wars Imperial Class SDs having around 10-12 cannons with an unknown number of smaller guns, The USS Enterprise only usually having a handful of phasers and 1-2 torpedo launchers and Halo UNSC frigates only having 12 cannons and one main gun)

A lot of these ships realistically would be able to do a lot more than shown in their respective medias...though they don't
