I was always taught that’s only polite.

I checked - and you were right. Etiquette still says - 6 or fewer diners at your table, you wait until others are served.

I think when i was a kid there was this unwritten rule about waiting till everyone got served before starting but I am not sure this is still a thing, I've been to restaurants with people literally thousands of times and no one ever waits till everyone is served before starting.

@iamnikki I just think as people slowly lose their manners, you have kept a higher standard then the rest of us. people like you are important to remind us of proper manners. don't change, being polite and considerate is a wonderful thing.

@reflectingmonkey thank you. I do try to be considerate.

@iamnikki that's how it felt, that's why i said something, i support niceness. one thing which is common in my part is to wait till everyone has arrived, is seated and ready to order before ordering.

I don't think it's rude or wrong; I think they just meant that it's silly and not necessary. Some people appreciate it, others are more casual.
no not rude i personally would not care and I would eat it depending on how starving I was.

@Stereoguy maybe in the US but I'm not from the US.
I wasnever taught that but it feels natural & civilized to wait.

I always wait. I do agree that it's a bit rude, yeah. I tend to judge people's table manners by whether or not they wait until others get their food and if they put a napkin on their lap or on the table. I also like to see how aware people are of their actions by watching to see if they taste their food before adding condiments or seasoning, especially salt.

maybe they thought it was too formal. I was always told to wait til everyone else has their food before anyone eats.
Nah man I just go for it, but I'd probably offer them a bite.
