I'm kind of amazed

How many people said to my post about my son's coworker:

"People lie"

Okay, so, who cares if someone lies to get out of work.

Why should people have to lie to get a day off? Why can't people just say, "Hey, I need to take today off?" Why are they forced to make up situations just to get time off?

Why is it okay for an employer to have to have an excuse? Why does an employer get to dictate what is an acceptable reason to take time off?

"They are just lazy"

So what? Who cares? If they are just lazy, they will be fired and life will move on. Why do you care that there are lazy people in the world? It makes work harder for you? Then set your work boundaries. Your employer needs you more than you need them, even in this economy. Hiring and training a new employee is expensive.

Sometimes, I think the resentment of people lying to not work is that the liar gets something someone else doesn't for lying, and they don't stop to think why the employer expects any sort of excuse as to why you need time off.

Stop being resentful and start expecting your employer to stop treating you like a child.

Adults shouldn't have to lie to an employer. Adult employers shouldn't need an excuse when someone wants a day off. The fact that employers make it so people have to lie is disgusting. The fact there are so many people taking the employer's side is gross.

You are not beholden to your employer. Ever. And your employer doesn't deserve your subservience simply because they pay you.

You would if you ran a business

Why should people have to lie to get a day off?

They don't. It's called a holiday and sick leave allowance.

Why do you care that there are lazy people in the world?

Anyone who has worked in teamwork knows why.

@BritishFailedAesthetic why do you care if someone lies to their employer, then?

I'm not agreeing with your reasons but i will go through them.

Businesses should plan on people calling out every day. If they don't, that's on them, not the employee. If you don't want to deal with people calling out, don't own a business that requires more than you to work it.

Not all places or hours allow holiday or sick leave. So what choice do employees not granted them do?

I have worked several team jobs and I literally don't care if a team member is out. If you are a true team, those left will work things out. If you're not a true team, you'll feel the loss. Again, that's an employer issue for not making sure the needs and staff are adequate for time off, not an employee.
@FoxyQueen No, they shouldn't, people shouldn't slack off.

If I'm not mistaken you are from the USA and I do think you guys should get European holiday allowance and sick leave.

I'm glad I don't own a business for the reasons you mentioned and in the UK most of my earnings would go to mother government.

@BritishFailedAesthetic Who is to say they are slacking off? Maybe they are sick. Maybe they had an emergency. There are hundreds of reasons a person calls out sick. An employer needs to be prepared to deal with that. It's like the basics of having a business that employs other people, since you can't control other people, regardless what employers believe. They know the required staff every position has. Many employers understaff to cut costs, leading to their own shortages in staff. That is not on the employee. The employer should staff better.

We should, but we don't. There is no federal law that requires employers to provide anything in the way of time off. Employers generally do to remain competitive, but they are not obligated. Part time workers are almost never allowed paid leave. Employers have been moving towards part time to reduce costs. Also, most places where people tend to call out are those working part time, so they call out and don't get paid for that time.
@FoxyQueen Wasn't reffering to people who are genuinely sick, an emergency, etc.

Obviously an employee that doesn't call in sick regularly shouldn't need to provide proof.

@BritishFailedAesthetic My position is, it shouldn't matter why they call in. It is literally none of the employer's business to know why.

My position is also, it shouldn't matter how often. Eventually theur absences will show they are unable to do the work in the time given. If the employee has done the work, despite numerous calls out, that means they are competent at the job they have been given, even with all the time out, which is a benefit to the employer, not a negative. If it is a negative, the employee will be fired, regardless of why they called out, again, making the reason for them completely unnecessary.

For what it is worth, I will always side with the employee. Without the employee, the employer has no business. It is to the advantage of the employer to realize they need the employee more than the employer needs them.
@FoxyQueen I'd love to work for you 🤭

@BritishFailedAesthetic I think I'd be an awesome boss.

But what I described, the getting work done, regardless of time off,is heavily based in what actual meritocracy is supposed to be in business, not what it has become. What it has become is hating employees who take time off as "not being a team player" and the puritan ideology of "Idleness is a sin", which, neither are true, but have been learned institutionally, despite how damaging it is to the human body and spirit.
@FoxyQueen
puritan ideology

I think I'd be an awesome boss.

We can both agree there!
