My son told me this today

His work just hired a new guy and the new guy didn't turn up for his first shift.

A few days later, the guy calls and apologizes for being a no show, but says his dad committed suicide in front of his entire family and he was just not even in a place to work.

My son said the boss asked him "for proof".

😬

Like what did he want? Photos?

Welcome to late stage capitalism where your minimum wage boss requires proof of an extremely horrific event to excuse an absence.

@Matt85 I'm going to say it is far more difficult for the guy whose dad did a full display of death over the employer who was inconvenienced. At least the employer isn't dealing with a lifetime of trauma now because his employee was unable to call out.

@FoxyQueen Yes but they probably hear all colours of excuse. i mean thats a pretty fricken awful thing to happen but employers might think it's "shock tactics" and a lie.

@Matt85 then the employer is messed up. Who would make up a lie like that just to not go to work?! That's pretty gross of the employer to assume he's lying, especially something like that. Just for a night off. It still reflects poorly on the employer any way you look at it.

@FoxyQueen they know theyre hated
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
@Matt85 Well, i would much rather be a humanitarian than whatever monster you are describing one has to become to be "successful".
Matt85 · 36-40, M
@FoxyQueen i mean they fire people knowing it's going to ruin their life...

@Matt85 Maybe, but the "cost" is too high to doubt. They need to trust. For anyone to even attempt to rationalize the behavior is iffy, frankly. Contrary to the offed guy's rhetoric, compassion is not "new age," but as old as time. This is why major religions give it precedence.
