Work christmas parties and/or drinks - yay or nay ?

For me it's a total nay. I never socialise outside of work with people from my work. The 'it crowd' at my work makes me want to puke sometimes because that same crowd seems to get preferential treatment from bosses/management any time incidents occur or there are HR/bullying/harassment (inc sexual) things going on.

I'm also single, without a girlfriend/partner, so I really can't socialise with the 'it crowd' as that's all comprised of 'perfect happy couples'. I wouldn't want to get a girlfriend just to be able to fit in - I prefer to stay single and in the background unseen.

Look, I'm as much of a people-person, perhaps even more, especially, but not exclusively, when working with others. I'm a team-player. But, work parties, Secret Santas, get-togethers, team-building exercises, socializing on breaks, and going to lunch together only leads to problems that are manipulative, political, and counter-productive. And, it creates a colossal deception that everyone cares about everyone else which I am finding out is not often the case.

That being said, I am not advocating being super-paranoid of everyone or assuming the worst about all the people you work with. I am just finding it is best to keep things on a professional level at all times.

Nay. Only problems will come from that.
