How many of you have customer service jobs and what is that like?

How many of you have customer service jobs? What is it like?

You can count food service, retail clerk and similar ideas.

Is it in person or a phone job?

What was your interview like? How long have you been in customer service

You can talk about a past job if you want.

Most of my adult work experience has been in customer service….restaurants, bars, retail, etc.
I thrive in that area.
I am very much a social person…I love people and interacting with people, and gosh darn it, people like me 🤣🤣

@ImpeccablyImperfect in the bar and the restaurant what did you do? Was it clothing retail?
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@robertsnj I was a waitress….food service, drink service, bartending….i worked in clothing retail for a bit (wasn’t my thing) and in grocery stores and home improvement stores (Lowes etc) I also worked in a slaughterhouse (cattle) for many years, and I did home renovations (mostly tiling and drywall) for a few years too…I had done my own home, then was offered more jobs through friends, which led to being hired by a contractor as his tile setter :)

Of course this spans a good many years….haha
i don't work in retail or even a typical "wholesale" job....but when customers come in without placing an order without doing it on the phone and telling me they are in a rush when they come in i go on my break... i love it cus i can get away with it...just to put it to perspective... don't tell me to hurry up when i'm working on a million dollar account when you're a hundred dollar account....take a number
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@beermeplease that is a lot of interesting pieces, wholesale but they can come in and accounts range from million dollar accounts to hundred dollar accounts. sounds like a fascinating job.
@robertsnj no...our million dollar accounts don't walk in... i've never even met the purchasers of those accounts...

I have been with my company for 12 yrs and in a customer service role for 5. Im the heart and soul of the company. I process retail store orders for 752 stores Corporate and Franchise)for 4 distribution centers located in 4 different states.

My contact with stores and owners is via phone, email and Teams My job is stressful and chaotic as I am always on call 24/7.

I have to be on my game because if not one mistake could cost someone a lot of money and problems.

I've done 5+ years in food service, we use to ask the customer if they like the free pickles and chips as a complemtry side and some would say yes but throw them away or not eat it all.
Just goes to show sometimes free stuff is valued less. Like in general, if something is not earned it isn't always appreciated as much.

I was a customer service rep for a catalogue many years ago. Catalog shoppers would cal l up to place an order for delivery. For the most part it was ok, but there were many days where you had to be VERY patient and kind, to really MEAN callers. They would complain about an item that was chipped in the mail, as if YOU did it , or they would say I need a refund rudely, or complain about other things too. I am patient by nature but man, sometimes I wanted to yell, Why do you think it's ok to be this way to a helping representative? But I just was kind instead. I really can't say I loved the job. It did get tedious after nearly a year there and I went to a different job.

I was a retail department store supervisor for 6 years. It was in person I had to handle a staff of five scheduling etc set up and tear down of events and promotions, stock takes, vendor relations, daily and weekly sale figure reports, customer service including complaints, cashiering, liasing with the store manager and advertising and promotion department to suggest items to promote for the month ahead etc
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@Longpatrol how many hours a week did you work? what career are you in now and what is your level of education It is interesting because retail doesnt' pay well but the transferrable skills is produce are high value in the marketplace
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@robertsnj 8am to 10pm 4 out of 6 day working week. So about 60 hours? And it was minimum wage, I had a diploma. I know work in digital marketing for a startup e commerce firm. Pay is much better, hours are far lower and I only deal with a small group of stakeholders.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I don't know if I did or do

I had small home improvement company and had to deal with people. Sold that bought a farm, sell my products to people. So I have I have to deal with people.

I think to some extent we are all in customer service roles, be it to internal customers (colleagues etc) or external customers. A huge part of my role is customer service to both. I absolutely love my job (even though people sometimes shit me to tears). In saying that, OMG I would hate to work in retail or food service. Kudos to those of you who do - thank you.

i hear its hell
sladejr · 56-60, M
I've only held them growing up. Sadly I don't have the patience for it. I'd never want to deal with the public in person these days ☹️
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@sladejr what do you do now? where your old jobs, retail or phone support or other?
sladejr · 56-60, M
@robertsnj I am halfway retired but looking to go back. I was with a worldwide media aggregator for years doing tv transmission and production. We had a client service desk that did most of the client interaction.

I had some client contact but usually they'd be so overwhelmed looking at our set up they'd be on good behaviour.

As long as you seemed to know what you are doing you were fine. It was a great job but it became too easy to do it remotely so now most is done overseas
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
hate it. I can't stand other people and the feeling is mutual
