I don't know what to say. This seems underhanded if you grandstanded to push him out of the way to showcase your own ambitions.

@MarkPaul I don’t really know how I could have grandstanded or anything like that. All I really did was have good sales numbers. My boss would praise me and I would say thank you, sometimes saying it was probably luck being scheduled at certain days/times.
To the extent that it was conversationally relevant, I did my best to let her know how much the manager did to enable us to sell well, I knew he desperately needed a raise and wanted to do what I could to convince the boss that he deserved one.
It seemed like the main thing my boss cared about was just the numbers on the paper and I guess mine were the highest more often than chance.
There’s other reasons he quit to but I think not being appreciated was the main one.

People like this are in short supply and should not be underappreciated.
Hopefully he'll find a better fit.
He worked his ass off and customers loved him.

@SW-User oh okay, well I mean the boss is also a “manager” but she’s the big manager whereas the guy was a store manager.

i feel his pain!! i quit because of the lazyass crew around me.
