It states they "can" work up to 6 hrs per day.
Theres nothing mandatory that i saw.
SW-User
@Virgo79 Mandatory isn't the point. It's that it shouldn't be allowed in the first place. Laws against child labor were hard fought over the course of the 20th century for a reason. If adults don't want to work low paying jobs with poor conditions and no benefits, then the "market" says the solution is kids need to fill those jobs? That is a warped labor market.
trackboy · 22-25, M
@Virgo79 a lot of parents will force their kids to work those jobs while in school. the kids get no c choice in it. parents will beat their kids and then kick them out of the house if they are not working while in school. they tell the kid work comes first and school comes last.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@trackboy i don't think theres that much work available after school hrs

Carla · 61-69, F
Ive been watching this.
If you don't think this is just another tactic to widen a gap that is already in need of a proper bridge, you are mistaken.

Can't support a family on two incomes? Send your adolescents out to work in the slaughter houses. That'll be great imprinting on their undeveloped brains.
Or, what the hell, we aren't teaching them in schools, why not keep them up all night to labor in your shop. Or maybe let young jane serve up alcohol to those brutes there in that dark corner.
You bet these lawmakers won't be putting their children at risk. Just the people that put them there, because obviously, they know no better.
Carla · 61-69, F
That is all very true, @trackboy.
The party that is all about the fate of parasitic cells, have no trouble exploiting poor, unrepresented children.
Do you see a correlation in that?
@Carla capitalism is exploitation. Bipartisan failure.
Expressman · 61-69
@Carla or some will (This was in Hillsboro OR) a woman was getting $200 a month from 3-5 guys to hump her 12 year old, who got pregnant.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I think I've said a few times that MAGA means the 1840s.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@CountScrofula the democrats are in power 😂 maga hasn’t been in power for half a decade
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@DeluxedEdition This is about state-level laws not federal policy. Shit in Arkansas and Ohio or wherever. Granted the Democrats are deliberately useless in stopping this stuff, but they aren't driving it.
deadgerbil · 22-25
The side that loves to say that they are for protecting children love to deregulate labor to let these greedy companies use child labor.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@deadgerbil Like how they think drag queen story hour is an abomination yet sending children to work is okay.

There is not a word in the English language to properly describe what dickwads the republicans are.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@SW-User I do not know why they would even want to be here if they would have to do such jobs.
SW-User
@CestManan Unfortunately for some it’s still an opportunity that they don’t have in their home country and the money they can send back may be worth it. But from what I’ve read, they often end up stuck in a bad situation that they weren’t planning on, though (lured over the border by promises of something better that didn’t work out that way).
Gloomy · F
@SW-User The "American Dream" still lives on even though it's nothing but a false narrative to keep the status quo in place because people think they will be rich one day or something.

yup even when it’s not about factories, Americans think it’s normal for teens to work in McDonalds after school wtf
CestManan · 46-50, F
@SW-User I think a lot of us as teenagers had such jobs. It is not horrible work really.
SW-User
@SW-User character building.
When you leave corporations so much wealth that they're more powerful than the electorate, you guarantee that this keeps happening.
Maybe Americans don't want to limit the power of wealthy people to ruin democracy. Maybe that's not ever going to be an option for such empire dwelling animals.
Certainly, suggesting it almost every week to almost as many Americans as I can has guaranteed their animosity and gives me a very special insight into their true character -. Yuck.
Thank the "family values" party. Vote Blue when you get sick of being told what you can't read....can't do with your own body.....can't say.....can't teach in schools....can't mention anyone in history anymore that was black.....can't accept climate change....cant handle any suggestion that MAYBE if we try there might be a way to cut down on morons getting guns to kill our kids with. The list of what we are losing is growing.
anybody wearing Nikes or using a smart phone shouldnt have a problem with child labor. but, then, they turn a blind eye when it goes on somewhere else.

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy I would say all, but of those, the corporations have the most control.
Gloomy · F
@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy Corporations carry the biggest blame, then the countries and then the consumer since it is very expensive to consume fairtrade or locally made products.
@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy I can’t vote to stop it in any other countries. And if the U.S. is still bragging about leading the world in human rights, how can they justify doing what those other countries do ?
I had to quit school when i was 10 years old,my dad passed away,at that time no food stamps no well fair,,,I have worked all my life,,,,never homeless, never hungry
deadgerbil · 22-25
@jackrabbit10 I said commas, not condoms. You really need to take a literacy course or something bc this is ridiculous
@Gloomy good talking,,I have to go cut some wood,so i can cook supper,,❤️
@deadgerbil just funning witheee,,,,,

Lots of 14 yr old are in better mental shape that their parent, who are abandoning them or using them for barter with and trade. Sadly it a human … tradition bred from the greediest and wealthiest and most powerful… to allow such a life style by denying rights, harboring wealth, keeping true intentions secret, between the top percent. Oh and they poo poo on compassion. They Bully their own. … the narcisist is in control because peaceful people don’t want to be. And all well paid attorneys drink the same kool-aid fed to them by experienced attorneys…plus the attorneys give themselves bend the interpretation of the law to defend criminal behavior. Just pay me and I have to defend you to the best of my ability using the law.
Expressman · 61-69
That's what you get for opening borders. They don't know the law or care. Money is money. Plus, many companies use illegals. They're not supposed to, but still happens.
@Expressman the lack of immigrants is a reason they're citing for doing this.
originnone · 61-69, M
IDK... I worked when I was 14...and 15 and 16....
originnone · 61-69, M
@Carla It's all talk at this point....there's always talk about silly things....Given that the government can't get anything passed on good things like national health care, I'm pretty confident they can't get that law set changed.
Carla · 61-69, F
@originnone state laws. These things are happening. And if/when these bills are signed and are opposed, it will go to an alt right supreme court. They will argue states rights.
Parents rights.
Read this. Can't post a link but it is easily accessible.
originnone · 61-69, M
@Carla You may be right then.
Not the "children need to be children" crowd trying to bring back child labour 😭😭😅
CestManan · 46-50, F
Wait what's going on? I remember back in the early '90s we were allowed to have part-time jobs in some places if you were at least 15 or older but the hours were pretty limited.
SW-User
@CestManan Here’s an example of what’s going on in Iowa:

https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/18/iowa-senate-child-labor-law
CestManan · 46-50, F
@SW-User So what short amount of time the kids have to be kids, the republicans want to take more of that away by sending them into labor or whatever jobs?

It seems strange how they want to "protect" kids from things like drag queen story hour but NOT protect kids when it comes to things like having to work.

If a teenager WANTS to work for spending money or save for their first car that is one thing but the jobs and hours need to be limited.

I remember when we were in high school and wanted to get jobs, thinking it would be so great (how little we knew) our parents were like, "You have the rest of your lives to work."

It seems funny also how supposedly so many jobs are off shore, automated, and eliminated YET there is a labor shortage?
Well if all these jobs are obsolete then there should not be a labor shortage, right?
why did you have a spare 100B for ukraines border security.
but couldnt give orange man bad 10B for the border wall?
SW-User
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I don’t know, I’m more concerned with the price of tea in China.
And it’s logical to think that those who claim to care about the welfare of children wouldn’t also be behind the laws that promote child labor and child brides. But that’s the paradox of the GOP.
Carla · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard not the welfare of living children. After birth they are pretty much on their own. What better group of people to exploit?
