When I Was In My 20’s I Worked At A Congregate Meal Site For The Elderly…

There was one little white-haired lady who hated fish with a passion…baked breaded fish, tuna salad, etc. One of my duties was to help serve the meal. When this little lady came through the line she had this look on her face and would tell me not to put that fish on her plate. I thought of her when I saw this photo.

When I was in college I worked in the kitchen of a nursing home. I loved those people!! The more cantankerous the better.

@nonsensiclesnail She certainly was a character. There was one old man named Mr. Green, he always wore overalls and he hated green beans. Didn’t want them to touch his plate.
@cherokeepatti I had one, a retired history professor. He was eating his baked potato and lost a tooth. He yelled at me for a solid 3 minutes because I served him a baked potato with a tooth in it!!

@nonsensiclesnail One day one of the cooks was using the bread slicer to slice loaves of bread that the other cook had baked. There was a big pile of bread crumbs from the crust mostly and instead of throwing them in the trash she took both hands and scooped them up. I said “Whatcha going to do with that?” She said “Put them in the mashed potatoes”. I said “Nah you aren’t doing that” thinking she was joking. She said “Watch me” and she threw them in the big pot of mashed potatoes. I asked her why she did that. She said because they used potato flakes to make the mashed potatoes the bread crumbs made it look like little lumps of real potatoes so they would be happier with the potatoes. I thought that doesn’t sound right. But they sure liked them. She also had a trick of using canned chicken to make a chicken loaf but she would boil one whole chicken and take the meat off the bones, chop it up and put it into the large bowl full of canned chicken….then she would put a few of the chicken bones in it. I asked her why she did that and she said so the people would think they were using all whole chickens instead of the canned stuff. And sure enough when a couple of them found bones in the chicken loaf they were telling one another it was real chicken. I would hear them talking.

@SweetMae We posted the menu a week in advance. But she would come to eat on fish days anyway.
