I've been offered to become a partner at the accounting firm I work at.

I worked hard to get this far. Hardwork despite what some say does pay off. I hope my son can see and understand what happens when you show up for work rain or shine and put yourself into it. He's been slacking with his part time job not taking it seriously. You take it serious and show them why you were hired and someone is bound to take notice. He says university is his main focus and it should be but work hard there too. Their high reccomendation of you will help in the future.

It might be a sandwich shop but you learn valuable skills there. Skills that will transition to your career path. When i was a child I worked at my parents pub. I would go afterschool to do my homework at the bar and then I would be asked to help. Everything learned is useful.

Props to you and congratulations. At the commencement of the Fall semester I will have invested just under 7 years towards a PhD. That's a full time credits each. During this time I've had 9 employers at various jobs from fast food to retail to my current employment as a bartender. Each in it's own way helped to develop my work ethic, goal orientation, my people skills and abilities to communicate well. I know where my heart is set career wise but I'm not a fortune teller. What I do know is I value each step it will have taken my arrival.

The lady that tends to our plants and landscaping charged $90 an hour. The folks that come by every couple of weeks to help clean the place earn about $75 an hour. We just got haircuts today and they charge $65 each for what takes about 20 or 30 minutes. All of the above are independent contractors and except for a little overhead don't have to share those rates with anyone.

When politicians reference those earning over $400,000 per year I think they are referring to our gardener, house cleaner and hair cutter. Do a great job at what others may think of as uninspiring jobs and one can become wealthy. And that may be the difference, they are enthusiastic and inspiring in the way they approach their service jobs.

The most important lesson you can learn from a part time job is how to deal with the public and your co-workers.

The money you earn is secondary.

Congratulations on your promotion.

The problem is that students are conditioned from a very young age that low wage jobs are basically crap. So then when they get to be whatever age you can legally work and they find themselves in one of these low wage jobs, they already have the mindset that it is a load of bs.
