It makes me so angry how badly people devalue labor.

If you work a full time job but don't make enough money, so many people tell you "Well that's on you, if only you had a better job." As if the work you already do isn't valuable, and you don't deserve to be paid accordingly to it.

It’s because capitalism bases pay on the scarcity of the job/people that can fill the job (usually). It definitely messes up the amount people can make.

@Scooter capitalism has raised the standard of living for more people than any other economic system in the history of the world.
What is so magic about 40 hours a week? Why does someone who works 40 hours a week deserve to have a place to live with all of their necessary bills paid? My life never worked that way. If I did not have enough money working a full time job I got a second job. The thought that the world somehow owed me something because I worked 40 hours never occured to me. If 40 didn't work I would work 60 or 65. Lots of people do this and don't think twice. I also went back to school and worked full time and went to school half time. In preparation for going back to school I taught myself algebra a subject I dropped out of in high school.
So 40 hours a week doesn't entitle you to anything. If you think bernie sanders or any of the other socialist candidates for president are going to lead you to the workers promised land where 40 hours a week will assure you of a "living wage", you had better think again. They, as usually, are blowing smoke. Don't be fooled they don't care for you any more than Donald Trump. They are just flapping their gums.

@Tiusflow 40 hours a week is the minimum for a job to be considered "full time." If you worked 39 hours a week or less then you're not a full time employee.

Your entire comment reminds me of something Hippo once said. "I went to the centrist rally today. We all held hands and sang 'better things aren't possible.'"

Essentially, the fact that most of the country is below the poverty line and three quarters of workers live paycheck-to-paycheck isn't a problem to you. So what if the majority of our citizens are working poor? Fuck all of them. Shut up and keep working and don't bitch about the fact that you're underpaid while corporate executives and shareholders make tens of thousands of times your salary for doing essentially nothing at all. Or in the case of the ultra-wealthy, doing quite literally nothing at all. 60% of wealth in America is inherited. Meaning that all the richest people have never worked a day in their life and never will.

But that's the crux of your position. Work and labor is inherently worthless and not begetting of money. People should work and expect nothing in return.

@BlueMetalChick where do you get you statistics from?

I am not saying work is worthless i am just saying putting in 40 hours a week doesnt entitle you to anything except 40 hours wages

@Tiusflow The CBO, primarily, but also the Cato Institute and a number of studies by UM Amherst. And a couple from the US State Department and the Commonwealth Fund.
